Fiscal Stimulus: The Chinese Way
View this Thread in Original format
Comrade Stalin
Stories like this make America seem like a blundering giant that's lost its way. Compare our stimulus with that of China. Call it socialism, whatever, it worked, and nobody can deny that. That's why I always supported a New Deal type of stimulus with massive government works programs to get people back to work. High speed rail, huge investment in green infrastructure integration, etc. How many blue collar jobs would that create, with accountants and other white collar jobs, to go along with it? Many.

Lost your job? Free education then. Go to college and expand your skills. You shouldn't be allowed to sit on your ass while you collect unemployment checks. Go to school! The government just doesn't know what the hell it's doing. I mean seriously, how is a student loan, "financial aid"? I have to pay it back. How is that helping me? But a million dollar missile that can only be used once is so worth the government's money. I'm fed up.

FFS, China is a communist country and they are pwning us in category after category, and the places where we still have the lead, they are gaining on us fast. Our system is in need of substantial change, and no, not the direction Republicans or Democrats want. It's in the direction of state capitalism. But it's never going to happen here. Why? Because Democrats are moderate right wingers compared to most of the G20 nations. That says a lot for what the Republicans are. Sorry to say it, but just flat out bat- crazy. I feel sorry for the people who voted for them in this Congressional elections. They essentially voted against themselves. *sigh*

World Looks to China after Stimulus Staves Off Recession

The giant fiscal stimulus and bank lending spree that China launched two years ago saved the world from recession. What can Beijing do for a follow-up act?

Internationally, the success of the unprecedented pump-priming has accelerated a shift in economic influence that has put Beijing front and center of policymaking, as this week's summit of the G20 major economies in Seoul is likely to show.

Domestically, the 4 trillion yuan package announced on Nov. 9, 2008, put a floor under an economy that was in free fall due to the global financial crisis. More than 20 million migrant workers who lost their jobs were quickly absorbed as the government started an array of public works projects.

Two years on, China can boast, among other things, the world's biggest high-speed rail network, which is doing wonders for the country's reputation.

"China's self-confidence got a big boost from the fiscal program which goes beyond the immediate economic effects," said Jonathan Fenby, head of China research at Trusted Sources, an emerging markets consultancy.

Fenby said the tangible results of the spending splurge can only increase China's pride in its ability to raise its game.

"One cannot help making comparisons with infrastructure in the U.S. and U.K.," he said. "I am sure the Chinese do."

Success, however, heightens expectations.

China, now the world's second-largest economy, is under pressure to shoulder more responsibility for everything from curtailing carbon emissions to reducing global economic imbalances.

Beijing's response to date has been to toss the ball back into the court of developed countries, particularly the United States, which it holds responsible for the world's economic woes.

"We came through the financial crisis test very well. We got full marks, 100 percent, but we're being criticized by those who failed to pass the exam," said Li Daokui, an economics professor who advises China's central bank.

I actually agree. There is no problem with stimulus as long as it is plowed into long term infrastructure improvements like they are doing. The US stimulus has been such a waste. I've seen two highways repaved in my city that were in perfect condition before...several months of work, and there is literally no difference between before and after, yet million$ were wasted. Same goes for sidewalks and other minor things I've noticed around town. Inventing jobs that don't need to exist is downright stupid. If were are going to siphon money from taxpayers to do something, it should be something beneficial over the long run like mass transportation..not pointless stuff like paying people to dig ditches and refill them as Keynes suggested.

Unlikeliest high speed rail ally ever? Haha, clearly I've been away too long.

one caveat..no tax hikes on anyone. ;) Cut the military 80% instead and use the money on something productive for a change. I support much more funding for scientific research, NASA programs, and other stuff that puts us on a positive/innovative long term trajectory. Muddling along with the status quo warfare/welfare state isn't getting us anywhere. The conservatives want a religious big brother government and the dems want a breastfeeding mommy nanny state. Both are bad options. We still need liberty and free markets for social progress and wealth generation..but also a government willing to set some epic goals to inspire the next generation. Neither party has any fresh ideas.

Seriously, when a country's most valuable asset is its military, something is ing wrong. People complain about socialist this, and socialist that, but you know who are the real socialists? The military, and most of them are "conservative". Riiiight. Conservative except with it comes to themselves. The government literally pays for everything for them. Rent, food, education, healthcare, and probably way more, all 100% free of charge. For the rest of us, you're on your own buddy! Want to go to college but don't have the money. Tough , get a student loan. But you, Sargeant Slaughter, you shall have all your needs taken care of, no questions asked! Just do what we say when we send you to risk your life in some hole third world country. The only socialists are in the military. I mean, god damn, a budget greater than the G20 combined? Talk about a nanny state, for a select few individuals. You know what other country has a similar makeup? North Korea. Does "military-first" ring a bell to anyone?

I say, withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan, and drastically cut the military budget. Use that money to educate the entire nation. WTF is the logic in a $600 billion military budget to fight shoe bombs, mail bombs, and idiots who can't even blow themselves up right in Times Square. It isn't even the military who are on the front lines here. It's the FBI, CIA, and NSA. Good police work, not occupying entire ing countries.

I shouldn't have to risk my life just to get a damn college degree paid for by the government. Free education from 1st-12th grade. WTF good is that? What can you do with that good ole' high school diploma? NOTHING. Want to improve the economy, well, that is one big fat ass start. Extend free education all the way to graduate school.

Excuse my language.

lol, I wasn't expecting a comment like that from Capitalizt, but - I have to admit - I'm not too surprised by it. There actually is a place for government spending and only the most crackpot of economic rationalists will argue otherwise. Capitalizt is a little more right-wing than most, but within some sort of reason.

yeah, this is good. a little bit of passion in this argument will do good for an America that is being overrun by either:
1) a bunch of illiterate genetic-misfired right wing fukwit authoritarians, or;
2) half-witted lazy s, which spend far too much time blaming others for their uninspiring existence - whom would gladly have you wipe their arses for them - borne from an insistence that the world owes them something.

I personally think that the latter are more of an issue across the developed world, but those fukwits that fit in the former category are what the US need to watch out for.
