[REVIEW] Tensnake at Le Poisson Rouge

So, being a huge fan of Tensnake and his productions for about 2 or so years, I was ecstatic when I first found out he would be touring the states. Went with a few friends who have never really been to an EDM show, though 2 of them had downloaded a few Tensnake songs prior to the show. And when I was driving out to NYC, I threw on a nu-disco mix I made (which I'll be releasing pretty shortly on here) to get them further acquainted with the genre.
The actual place was pretty cool, it was a downstairs lounge, pretty dark and moody, it reminded me of the former Arc, or like a larger, less dingy Sully. The floor though, was disgusting, I was frequently sticking to it... and there was some god-forsaken unknown crap on the floor up by Tensnake, in which some dude slipped and fell right in while dancing.
Got to the place around 11:15 and the opening DJs (I believe JDH and Dave P were the openers) were on... the place wasn't too crowded, but people were actually dancing, which could be rare for opening DJs. The 2 of them played the slower, more soulful type of nu-disco... heard a few re-edits of classic songs thrown in there. They did a good job building up, successfully adding more and more energy, although from time to time they let the songs drag out instead of quick-mixing them.
Tensnake took a while to come on, I think it was 1:15 when he finally started. Opened with "Get It Right" (apparently he opened this way in Philly too according to kadomony), and then played quite a number of his own productions and remixes. He played "Holding Back My Love", his remix of Jonny Dynell's "Jam Hot", which he held out and looped for a while, and of course "Coma Cat". The crowd was going mad during Coma Cat, as expected. Lots of people there were genuinely into nu-disco and familiar with Tensnake, which I liked. Unfortunately, Tensnake only played for an hour! At about 2:10 he left, after spinning his remix of "Reckless" by Azari and III (aka the song that samples Snap). No encore, or nothing.
After he was finished, 2 other guys came on and played some uplifting electro/disco. Not really sure who the other guys were, and the music they were playing was decent, but the crowd really cleared out by this time. Shortly after, maybe 3 songs in, my friends and I left to go get falaffel. We were hungry and tired by that point, especially considering I had to drive all the way back to Suffolk.
The crowd was pretty much your normal, unassuming college types, very little in the way of Jersey Shore wannabes and creepy 40-year old salarymen, like you'd see in Pacha. Some really cute girls too! Unfortunately, my girlfriend isn't a clubbing type and doesn't like house music, so she didn't want to go. My friends seemed to really enjoy themselves at the show, and they were dancing like crazy, in comparison to the people I usually go to shows with, who like to just stand around with their arms crossed :P
Overall, the night was great, venue was pretty cool (save the sticky floors), crowd was awesome and into the music, openers were good. The big complaint was the short length Tensnake was on for. Hopefully he'll tour the States again soon.

| Great review, sounds like you had a really good time! I've really enjoyed what I've heard of tensnake and now I'll def make a point to see him out when I get a chance. |

i was there for the Philly show on Friday and from the sounds of your review, he played the same set...not surprising b/c he's not actually mixing tracks on CDJ's, he's playing a live set with a computer and controller.
was nice to hear Holding Back My Love and Coma Cat from the man himself, but otherwise it was a rather generic set. |

I had the same impressions seeing him in Philly. It was great, but he only played for an hour or so. I was thinking, wtf, Voyeur is open until 3:30 am. But that's pretty standard for Making Time parties in Philly where the headliner is done by 2 am.
I think Philly's openers were your closers. They were pretty good and got the crowd warmed up.
I can't believe I missed finally meeting Ammora in Philly. I guess our paths must have crossed. Kadomony (Sam) and I were right up front the whole time. In fact, she might have been talking to him, but I didn't realize it. |

haha oh jeez...I missed Sam too b/c I spaced out and forgot to ask if he was goin...we were by the right side of the stage the up near the seats the whole time, but it was packed..no way i would have recognized anyone!
we will eventually get it together (tho i'm moving to florida in 3 weeks to maybe not soon lol) |

oh i must say the 2 guys that opened for him in philly (Teengirl Fantasy) were also AMAZING. live spacey deep techy chillwave. i loved it (and the free PBR's ;) ) |
