Subb-an - 'What I Do EP'
Culprit (CP011)

What I Do
My Slang
No More

Info

The emerging talent of Subb-an is ushered into the Culprit fold for the label’s eleventh release. An extended member of the Culprit clan, the young lad from Birmingham clearly shares the label’s quintessential moody funk-infused sensibility.

Subb-An’s debut EP for Culprit, ‘What I Do’ is a statement of intent for a man exploring the soulful and playful edges of house and techno. The A side and title track ‘What I Do’ has been slaying discerning dancefloors for months, blending strong Chicago house roots with the polished warmth that LA-based Culprit has come to embody, but always adhering to darker, clubbier atmospherics. The uncluttered yet highly sophisticated production, composed of punchy clap-driven drums and an unrelenting bassline combined with the simple yet infectious vocal, builds up the track for a mighty release in the second half. Aided by superb warm synth stabs this is a bona-fide stand out release already inspiring hands-in- the-air moments as road-tested by the likes of Jamie Jones, Clive Henry and Droog.

The playful ‘My Slang’ is similarly catchy but with more upbeat bassline that keeps the track rolling throughout. In addition to his fantastic use of disembodied vocal bits, Subb-an sticks to his innate sense of dynamics, steadily building steam, to let it out and build up again. This track is always moving and grooving.

‘No More’ features vocals from Subb-an´s young collaborator LOiS. Essentially a deep house track but with strong, Chicago-house inspired drums and warm pads, the track has that smooth early evening vibe. Again dancefloor centric, the track lets its subtle electronic bassline kick in half-way through as the classic and sexy female vocal wraps itself around it.

Subb-an first broke through in 2008, with a residency at his hometown’s clubbing bastion, Below. He’s been increasingly active on the studio front in the last two years, following his initial releases on Immigrant and Leftroom with a growing catalogue of recordings and remixes for Bpitch Control, Hypercolour, Mothership, Trapez Ltd, and 2020 Vision Recordings, as well as his own One Records - a collaboration with Below founder Adam Shelton. Clearly a young man on the rise at age 24, Subb-an already possesses a clarity of style that belies his youth and Culprit may well have a huge hit on their hands with this one.

For better or worse, the first two sound like stereotypical Standard party tracks. They're just fine (though those breakdowns confuse me) as good filler tracks imo.

Don't care for 'No More.'
