See Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music. He's sardonically biased in his opinions, but good at describing the varieties out there, and includes sound samples for each subgenre. It's very well done. I could explain the subgenres myself, but I'm too lazy. Perhaps later. ;)

Well first of all know that Drum'n'Bass is not Trance.....it's Drum'n'Bass!!! And the name explains everything....There are Drums...most of the time not acoustic....and there's the Bass like...it sounds hard actually and most of the time they have more than 140 BPM(beats per min.)

Trance....wow....trance is huge.....

Melodic Trance
Progressive Trance
Uplifting Trance
Hard Trance
Vocal Trance

They all sound great trust me...is your looking for something emotional try MELODIC and UPLIFTING TRANCE

If you just want to hear something and entertain yourself with the beats try PROGRESSIVE TRANCE

If you feel everything is just too soft for you and you need some energy, try HARD TRANCE....

If you're into vocals and words mean alot to you try, VOCAL TRANCE

That's all I could say for now

theres ambient trance, buttrock goa, hi-nrg [thats a form of techno, but it skims some trance requirements :)], acid trance, epic/dreamy trance [cheese and happy tracks]
and some other variations of trance too
techno is trance's evil twin, its dark and un-happy
drum 'n bass isnt trance, its urban music, with hardstep, techstep, darstep, darkside 'n jungle, drum 'n bass is clean and has no synths or stuff, mainly a big bad bassline and snares/hi-hats etc

yeah, go on, bash meh!
most of that info isnt correct

I would say.. melodic/uplifting, dream, progressive, deep, hard, tech, acid and psy/goa are the different sub-genres. But there might be anothers. Drum'n'Bass is another genre, like Techno or House.

There are acually three subdivisions of Psy trance or Goa (or buttrock as some of you distastefully put it)

Goa - which is more based on oriental music scales and melodies
Astral Projection, MFG, TIP, Hallucinogen

Full on - which is fast chaotic and sometimes pretty wierd and scary
Skazi, Talamasca, Psysex, Psy Craft

Minimal Progressive
(my favorite and what I currently collect)- slower than full on and a lot more minimal(duh) and relaxed
Ticon, XV-kilist, Atmos, Shiva Chandra, Reefer Decree

and there is a new style which is somehow related to progressive house but i´m still researching into it.

As for the Trance You guys listen to nowadays I am still becoming familiar with them since i stopped collecting mellow in 2000.
back then there was : acid trance, progressive trance, epic trance, dream trance, tech trance, deep trance, hard trance, and Nu NRG

But what ive been pondering the most about is.. when my friends say
"hey isnt this techno" when im listening to trance, and i find myself sort of wondering what to say cuz all i know about techno is the damn 666 song that goes ti ti ti ti ti uh~~~~ and twisting left to right left to right....
