| Anyone that wants something similar to UAD should check out some of their LA2A, 1176 Fairchild clones as they are damn cheap right now. Prices are around 200 and below. A steal. The API is a must have and their new hybrid H compressor seems ideal for EDM. Not sure why no one has mentioned it. |

, that's wicked. Seems like all the big names are doing serious discounts at the moment.
I wish soundtoys would. |

| What's Wave's best plugin for making the bass punchier? I know a lot of people use RBass, but do they have any others? |

By punchier do you mean attack ? The transient designer is rather cool. Sort of like a MC but deals with transients. I would forget the signature series plugins especially the JJP. YOu can't go wrong with the LAXA, the 1176 , V compressor is great for colouring, and of course the C4 or C6 which is one of the best tools for shaping sounds. I honestly think any of those optical modelled compressors and a nice colouring EQ like the pulteq would do.
One thing I would try to do tho for any compressor is try to go for one that has the mix setting in the plugin to make the parallel compression easier without having to use sends. The H compressor is very interesting and colourful. |

| Let me see. The Glue is only $99, has no dongle and WUP. That compressor is a steal :D |

Read this thread. This is exactly what I meant.

you used the word punchier which has some relation to attack. Rbass won't do this. it might make your bass seem larger than the original signal with the added harmonics but it won't really change the dynamic profile which most would associate with punch.
If anything, by making your bass larger, it will naturally be rounder thus less punchy, Not saying it is a bad plugin, You can apply things after to bring out the transients but I think this plugin doesn't do what you think it does. |

I know what Rbass does, but punch isn't really it AFAIK.
You need to describe more clearly what effect you want in terms of envelope, distortion, and frequency, rather than just asking for more "punch" of all things. |

Do you use the Rbass for the LFE? Or do you not work in surround?
I'm just wondering as I've never used a plugin for that and only really used the DBX subharmoic synth (hardware) for that purpose.
@kit - I think woody means a hard knee compressor.
Woody, find fast knee compressor, and set it to a fast release and fast attack to get that pumping effect. Unfortunately, Waves, IMO only have soft knee compressors. |

the mixing i'm doing now is really aesthetic and I leave the verbs or really anything that can really cause issues especially with surround alone as that is something to leave for the engineer. I basically get a good enough artistic version of the tracks and then leave it to the engineer. Surround sound is something I know absolutely nothing about and messing with low frequencies without really knowing what i'm doing will get me a load of trouble.
For the project I'm doing now, the one jazz cue you heard, that is stereo despite the HD version being 5.1. Not much point in having the music in 5.1 . But I did help out on one suspense/scary project as a favour to help a colleague in a jam and he was saying that I have to keep in mind the engineer and producer will really use the surround sound and that he really has to play it safe. I was just the composer tho and he was the computer guy.
Right now , I play it safe. IT is better to tip toe on egg shells until your employers trust you more which thankfully hasn't taken too long. They still double check all the audio tracks but as far as the composition, they've pretty much given me free reign and just gloss over it really quick.
So no, never touched anything that could impact a surround sound mix. I just don't know enough about it. I would say it is rather rare tho , surround sound music except in film as it is just too expensive. That one thing I helped out on was a rather popular show and the composer was having a nervous break down.
I have about 5 days to complete al the cues and while they are mixing, I'm working on the next batch. I do show up once in a while if I finish early with some Champagne and just hang around you know just pushing buttons and faders randomly. |
