first off by no means let anyone think i dont like trance or anything but living where i do its shunned upon alot all of it is seen as cheesy and commercial... which i guess is good in a way too (most not though!) because it does open your eyes to other e... i was just wondering whats some other flavours i could get im just looking for stuff to expand my horizons... i have a very little bit of prog and psy but yeah there just like one off tracks that are either really popular or ive stumbled on by mistake... so can anyone reccomend some stuff? nubreed series good? also i find myself calling alot of stuff really cheesy or seeing how it could be that i would have loved when i first got into trance... do tastes evolve? and if so how much of your initial style do you keep intact and how does that affect your future tastes :) i wonder... there are a few tracks i guess i still love because there classic to me but iw onder if i hadn't heard them when i did if they would still be... i think thats whats great about electronic music everyone brings there own journey to a track... and has thier own unique relationship...
anyway what do you guys think :) bit of food for thought :D
i think at the end of the day i find myself jumping on the paul van dyk bandwagon and just listening out for 'good music' genres make things to messy and gets everyone all anal... i spose our version of 'good music' is trancey tho... which is just contridicting what i said above because im quoting genres :D but ahh you need some minimal form of definition i guess! :D |

heh jah i dont know about perth but here in melbourne no one even knows what trance is (well a small minorty do but that's beside the point) let alone labell it as cheesy. All tunes with a repetivious beat go under the label as techno here, which is very annoying but you just have to live with it.
As for your other questions, i would recomend you DO take a look at other types of electronic music, i do, i love some of the GU series and other artists like Max Graham James Holden (just got his Fear of a Silver planet CD...amazing) and many more..... i went to Dave Seaman GU in Melbourne woo that was a hoot!
but in the end i always come back to trance, its just soo good, today I had a crappy day, came home and chucked on Ferry Corstens set at Radio 538 (2001) and oh man everything is alright now. |

I dunno if i missed everything else or what, but about the question regarding do tastes change. My answer is VERY much! :toothless
2 years ago, before I didn't know what trance was, my brother had a CD, Northern Exposure, that he listened to in the car (only techno he had), and I loved it (at the time) and copied it for myself and everything.
A few months ago, now addicted to melodic and uplifting trance, I pick up the CD, listen to it, and cannot find ANY of the amazingness I had when I first listen to it. This is much fact that tastes for trance styles (or music) change.
Also, I used to listen to MUCH cheesy, hardcore, ravey , like Braveheart theme trance remix, etc. and then after listening to Airscape - L'esperanze, and falling in love with that song, I moved more into the trance I listen to today.
I believe my style changed here, but that was because I did not know and was only restricted to the intial style of ravey hardcorey cheesy first, before the actual stuff which I knew I loved... :)
That's as much as i can contribute! :p :D |

Regarding the question about taste...yes! Tastes definitely do change. I know that the tracks that I think are e and 'cheesy' now, I would have adored when I first started listening to trance. I put that down to plain ignorance caused by not hearing much trance, and therefore not knowing any better. I suppose that after you hear a large sample of music from a certain genre, you can separate the quality tunes from the mediocre stuff.
As well as that, I used to label anything that my parent's would listen to as 'old crap'...but one day I made the spontaneous decision to play one of my dad's old Pink Floyd records, and now I love the 'old crap'.
So yeah, I guess tastes evolve by searching out for new music, and not restricting yourself to one genre.

Around here not many people know what trance actually is. Everything from house, trance, dnb to happy hardcore is labelled 'techno crap'...*shrugs* |

Jah... if you're lookin for a change you should check out Nu-Sshool Breaks. I've been seriously getting into them -- especially since one of my mates (or aquantances) is a breaks DJ here in Perth and i've got a couple of his mix CD's. I still love my Trance but it does seem to be missing some of the phatter funkier elements present in Nu-Sshool Breaks and Drumm N Bass.
Some CD Recomendations off the top of my head. :)
Y4K - Next Level Breaks -- FreQ Nasty
Plump DJ's - A Plump Night Out
Stanon Warriors - The Stanton Session
Greg Packers CD -- can't member what it's called but i like it. :) |
