Yo ..

Has anyone any tips on how to get that wide sounding sub bass, my sub's always seem too centered, I have tried experimenting with 2 panned channels, but its not right at all .. lol .. any advice or help ?

You need to introduce an element of difference to the separate left and right versions. For example one slightly lagging the other or perhaps one send thru some special filter treatment with something like an amp sim filter plug.

I would probably keep the true sub component in mono and just off centre (with kick slightly off centre in other direction) but then the low mid bass and or higher bass layers hard panned if you want a wide effect, but I'd have them slightly less wide than some of the far out hi hats and shakers. Consider things like phasers on a higher bass element to give it that 'simon patterson' movement.

Have you tried things like M/S shaping - i'e' eqing / compressing bass differently in the centre compared to left / right spectrums?

Maybe you could post up a youtube embedded link here, demonstrating the wide sub bass you have in mind.

Why on earth would you want to achieve a sub-bass with stereo width??

AVOID AVOID AVOID!

You should ideally dead-centralise everything below 120 hz as it will sound dead awful on anything with a good bass response; i.e. a club system.

The rule is that sub bass should be completely mono! If you want to achieve width then layer as much as you desire, but only with freq's ideally above 200hz.

I completely agree with the person above me. Keep your sub bass mono, centered! Ofcourse there are people who will ask why and say that people should experiment more, but this doesn't go for the sub bass. The sub bass has so much weight and power in the lower frequency spectrum that it will destroy your mix, or at least muddy it up too much.

However, what you can do is layer your bass. Have your subbass centered, then put a bass synth which plays for example the same notes in the 200 - 1500 Hz area. You can widen this bass, by putting some chorus on it, or a stereo spread tool.

Spreading your sub bass wil only give you mixing problems mate. And if you feel your subbass lacks energy or weight, you can always EQ it and add a few Db's around 80 - 90 Hz, with a low Q.

Aly & Fila apparently do a lot of stereo separation with their basses and they have some of the most driving basslines I've ever heard. Their remix of Majera - Velvet Sun amongst others sound incredible and I've heard it has to do with stereo separation.

Unfortunately I don't have much to add as far as how to get it done, I'm just figuring it out myself now.

most of the time the wideness you hear in bass isnt actually the sub-bass, but its done in a way where your brain thinks it is
try layering another bass on top of the sub-bass, make sure to highpass the 2nd bass

or you can use something like otium fx basslane to narrow the more sub-bass frequencies leaving the others wider sounding

from listening to some of there tunes (which you're right they do have driving basslines) IMO they mono the bass but seperate the mid bass n above so above to 200hz im guessing.

Keep the sub-bass MONO.

Yep what he said.. just spread your midbass with a stereo imager, not too much though.

Maybe in the bass, not in the sub bass. Never. No.

The Waves Doubler does a good job at "widening" sounds. The S1 Stereo Imager won't help much if the original sound is very mono.
