That was kinda my thought... I don't HAVE to have the sub on all the time.

But, maybe I'd be tempted to. Hard to say, really. :)

Yeah, I know, I'm about to get in trouble.

You hear it time and again... keep subwoofers out of the studio... But, I think I'm going to break the rules.

Every single one of my mixdowns turns out bass-heavy. Ridiculously. Every time. Thank god I'm thorough enough to listen to all of my tracks on various systems before making them public. Car stereos reveal all. :stongue:

I'm one of those producers that makes almost all my decisions off of my ear. I never have any idea that my song is a mud-puddle of bass when I'm listening through my monitors.

Maybe I just need bigger or different monitors. I'm using Event ALP5's and I'm sure that has something to do with it. But, still... everyone pushes all this "flat" and "accurate" response stuff all the time... yet I can't help but realize that you can't tweak something you can't hear.

Anyway, I know I'm going to get harassed for even considering this, but I'm mainly curious to see if there is anyone else here who had to add a sub/change to bigger monitors/started using hi-fi speakers/etc. because of this problem.

Focus on getting your record to sound good in your bedroom. As long as it sounds good to you in your bedroom you are good. Honestly don't worry about anything else. You suck so it wont make that much of a difference what it sounds like on other playback systems as you are the only one who will be listening to this stuff. :haha:

Do you need a sub for this?

Maybe... maybe not.. who cares?

HUGE mistake! Just use a frequency analyzer and keep an eye on the lows. Subs will just RUIN your music :whip: :whip:

I personally use 5" speakers with a 8" sub, but i never produce with it on. I only use it to check reference how the kick and bass are working together in the 80hz- range to make sure their intensities and tones are balanced and how the sidechain is working down low, which I usually do by listening from the corner in my room about 10ft away, walking back and forward to make adjustments. Other than that, the sub is off. Its a really great reference to how your track would sound on a PA's subs or any other subs for that matter.

Just an ongoing joke relating to the amount of times I've recommended them. I own the JBL LSR 2325p and I think I've convinced at least 5 people to buy HS80's so far.

@palm - Personally I think the CMS65's are EXTREMELY good monitors (heard/used them in one session) but the thing I have trouble with is that when you're spending that much, I reckon just bite the bullet and go all the way to Focal twins which are just in a different league until you spend $4000+. The only provision to that is if you have a small room, the focals won't work and if you're going that far make sure you don't have square glass goldfish tank of an apartment with no desk and acoustic treatment ;)

The MCS65's work better in smaller spaces and you're also not spending all that money on the expensive twins, especially when you can't get the full benefit of the focal due to environmental concerns.

but arents the twins like double the price or more? between there is the solo though which is very interesting imo. atleast for smaller rooms. but in that price there are many options; genelec, dynaudio etc. id love to compare 8040 with CMS65, i think i know what will separate them though, and i have a feeling the 8040 will have a deeper bass and more SPL while CMS65 a clearer mid. I dont really know but somehow Focals in general seems to have low power handling but great clarity. And then theres Opals around the same price as Twins (i think?). Man its many options, glad im finished with it for a while lol.

I've also been doing the "listen from a different area of the room" method to hear the bassline. :stongue: But the sweet spot is a bit high in the freq spectrum.

Are 8" drivers too big/boomy? I've never listened to 8" monitors.

the problem with cheap 8" is lacking midrange.

I use my genelecs with the matching sub. You can change the gain on the sub so it doesn't really cause any issues and right now I have no bass traps. In fact I listen to things at pretty low volume that I never bothered to treat my room at all. The speakers are far from the wall and pretty close to my ears that any second order reflections are negligent. I suppose if I knew I would be living somewhere longterm , I would invest in proper treatment but I get by without.
