OK, how's this: |
Macroeconomic activity is a slow, obvious and relatively noisy process that can be avoided at the personal microeconomic level by preparing for its affects when they trickle down.
TL:DR
Personal accountability for maintaining ones economic security. |

are you seriously expecting people to plan for market externalities few people could have predicted or understood? ie you're getting minimum wage on a GM assembly line, and you're expected to see massive financial failure coming in areas you've never been interested in? |

You don't have to know when a recession is coming to save for a rainy day. And no, I don't buy the "we're too poor to save" excuse. If some Chinese factory worker from the countryside or a Mexican strawberry picker is able save money and send money to their poor families, then anyone can ing do it. |

i have no doubt that people like you or shakka or lilith would have little problem, but no, i don't expect the average citizen of any nation to have prepared adequately for a financial collapse akin the US'.
and, its pretty hard to save if you don't have a job. |

I would like the government to double social security taxes so we could pay for something like this. You are eligible only for the amount you put into the social security fund. That would be nice. |

Or perhaps means-based testing to allocate social security funds? It may seem like a raw deal for wealthy folks who have paid into the system and then don't get anything back out when they reach retirement age, but it would certainly help keep the system solvent. Jesus, I just pulled a "librul." me. |

Now, that I'm going to disagree with because while things may not always be fair for everyone, things have never been more equal for a citizen in a highly developed, westernised country. Compared to lots of places in the world-
Education is available (In fact its compulsory to a point)
News media is omnipresent (everyone has TV and newspapers)
Self learning has never been easier (internet, libraries)
Travel has never been cheaper
The information that is there is comparatively uncensored
Ignorance, apathy and dislike is no excuse. You don't have to like it, but it is part and parcel of life to KNOW about it when it does affect you.
I dont like economics either, its utterly boring and I'd rather be playing in the garden, shopping or travelling somewhere sunny. But I have to know about it to some lesser or greater extent because it will sneak up and wreck my life if I dont!
The hit the US took was a long time coming, we where talking about it here in 2006-2007 sometime ago and it was most definitely spiralling into the poo well before Obama got there. As clued in as some of us are, none of us are deep into the whole finance 'scene' so to speak, we're really just average people that have a vested interest in not being bollocked over from someone elses fault.

Lifes already horrible without a job, but like I said if you're willing to travel to somewhere better, it is an option. It might be the very hard option compared to sitting in the couch eating chips and watching daytime TV doing nothing, but there is a choice. |

An average working murrican here:
Damn near 90K a year job
Single - 4kids : 2 households
Its hard to plan for like this.... When after all bills paid, I will be lucky to have 50bucks left between paychecks.
Lilith is right and so is that pkc fella. ;)
At the present moment it is hard as hell to put away for a rainy day with all the responsibilities that one in my lifestyle has to pay for. (Lifestlye consists of kids, work, kids, running cars into the ground due to travel and BILLS)
However, once all the lil ones grow up and move on, (7 more years baby!!!y
don't think that I won't be throwing in 35% of my gross into a fund or several others to build a nest egg. :)
I won't go through this again.
It just sucks right now....... |
