I wont go into too much detail cuz I don't want you to think I am being unfair so I am just gonna stick to the absolute facts, uncolored in any way...
I already explained how the vibe was a little weird due to the hors d'oeuvres being distributed on the dancefloor and it tool me a while to get it really rocking. However I got it going in the end and, unfairly but quite understandably I overshot my set time by about 25 mins... Generally a good thing for the promoters though. They like a DJ to be having fun and playing longer.
About 10 mins before I finished the warmup/closing DJ came up to my tour manager and said "He HAS to finish now, I have to play!!!" Marianna said she would find out when I was gonna finish and I said I'd do two songs and call it quits. I totally didn't realize I had overshot. Halfway through the first of the two songs the DJ threw a hissy fit, picked his CDs up and threatened to leave, telling us "Do you know who I am???". Marianna (quite brilliantly) replied "Ummm no. I have been booking DJs in Curitiba + Brazil for 10 years and I have never met you or heard of you before". At that he slinked off to the corner to wait for me to finish.
As if that wasn't hilarious enough, I played my final track and invited him to start prepping his opening record. He inserted his CD and started to mix... I was playing at 127 and I could see his BPM counter rising... 126, 127, 128, 129, 130... Then he looked frantically at both CDJs and turned to me asking "What is this? What did you do?" I asked him calmly what was wrong and he replied, "This is different!", pointing to the Pitch Width on the display. I explained that I always use +/- 6% as it is far more accurate. "But how do you change it?" he said. I was dumbstruck. A DJ not knowing that you can alter the pitch width on a CDJ? Really? So I showed him how to get it back to +/- 10% and he began to mix again... I saw the BPM counter rising... 126,127, 128, 129, 130... He was CLEARLY having issues. At this point he took his headphones off and said "I think it would be better to just finish you're music and then the people can clap. Then I will start. So I said "I'm playing at 127bpm mate. Just set your CDJ to 127bpm and it will be pretty much spot on". So he donned his headphones again and started to mix... 126, 127, 128, 129, 130... Off came the headphones again. "No no it will be more fun if the audience can clap you and then I will start". By this point my last record had been looping for about 1 minute and the crowd were gonna get restless so I performed a quick acapella/slowdown and left him to it...
Now as you can see, I haven't slagged him off, named him, or said ANYTHING that wasn't completely true. Therefore Facebookers this ISN'T a moan or a bitch... its just an amusing anecdote about my gig...
A gig that I TOTALLY enjoyed... Thank you Curitiba! xxx

No he may not have "slagged" the guy but he mentioned the night he played and where he played. Shouldn't be hard to figure out the idiot who didn't know how to properly work the decks.
He should have just said, "i think i'm doing the audience a favour now" |
