A Nightmare on Brant Street 2: Worm Holes

My night had started out at a Bingo hall (don't ask) and I had lost track of time, and was needed to start filming the sequel. Got to Footwork just after midnight.. it's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark  It's been a while since I've been there and not a lot has changed in terms of clientele; Saturdays can still be as dodgy as Fridays. The major plot theme of the sequel is the idea of wormholes. Throughout the night while and before Satoshi would play, a worm hole would appear and take a specific person's dreams/thoughts and spew it out on the dance floor. There must have been some pretty messed up day dreams going on because it seemed to be couples night at Footwork as well as a senior citizen's recreation center. There were more than just the one older raver dude this time. More interesting characters include the kingpin leader, the female sasquatch - who later decided to shed her skin and was actually an amazon, and some lazer tag kids. :wtf: I suppose there might have been an overcast in actors, because the place was really packed up until after 4, which was great for Satoshi and the club!

The soundtrack to the movie was pretty epic for the most part. I completely missed J-butz set, but I'm confident he'll make it to the final cut of the cd release. Nitin was playing when I got there and I was a bit skeptical at first because he usually opens for a more techier sound. Don't get me wrong, every time I have heard Nitin play this year has been stellar, and he's easily become one of my local favourites, but I wasn't accustomed to hearing this darker side of him. As a result, he completely froze me and it was the best I've ever seen him. I think this deeper, darker, progressive, more house influenced sound suits him better. Not a dull moment and just blissful misty tunes until just before 2. Satoshi was running a bit late cause he was napping from fatigue, but wouldn't have minded if Nitin played until close; it was that good. He sounded like Satoshi pre 2008 up there and even dropped some raw underground New York house in there which Satoshi likes to do every so often. Bravo. :)

Another wormhole finally opened up and the samurai nightmare man appeared on the stage. I made my way to the front cause I was the main protagonist to the story and had a long way to battle as hopefully I would survive and make it to the next sequel. I was not as prepared as I thought because Satoshi Tomiie's format had changed. Instead of gradually enticing us and focusing on the whole club as one victim, he stole the dreams of individuals and transformed the place with them using the wormhole. He started off slow, progressive, melodic like I had hoped; masking his innocence with the airy sounds in his garden. Didn't take long for him to spew us out into his basement where he played some dirty, raw, New York beats. He usually waits farther into the movie to show his true colours and turn us inside out, but he turned the lights off to the basement and started dropping some dark prog; we had many casualties. Sounds of night bells and rattlesnakes were all we could make out. After an hour and a half we found a laundry chute and ended up in his ballroom where he surprised us with distorted haunting vocals and hints of percussion. Someone must have been thinking about Stereo at that point! :D Sporadically, the wormhole went out of control, and took us back to the various rooms of sound we had been in... we knew the climax would be near... and that's when the movie flopped. Every single time I've seen Satoshi (including the 4 this year), he's known to save the best for last. Instead of the most dark, twisted tunes for the ending of his movie, he loses his powers, and plays boring, lifeless tech house until almost the end. I felt really let down and was shocked, because it's what I look forward to the most. A group of people must have dreamt it!! Grrrr. I suppose he decided to tease us with it throughout the whole set, but I prefer the darkness delivered collectively in a massive cloud at the end. He played a bit funkier for the last 20 minutes, but his hold on the victims failed, and most people left as survivors.

His set had potential to be better than the first part, but an atrocious ending left too much of a bad taste. But other than that, and the fact that he only played just over 3 hours, the first 2 hours were superb. He redeemed himself a bit after the credits with his encore... a remix of Funkadelic - (Not Just) Knee Deep WTF!! LOL. What message was the dream demon trying to relay?? That we're all just mental patients who did actually just hallucinate it all? Hmm.. I actually look forward to part 3! Maybe Nitin will take over as the villain? ;)

Thanks Footwork for another great night!

wow.. crazy review man!

I got in around 12 and button was doing a fine job and the room was filling up fast. The crowd was a mixture of course and sometimes smelly :( It wasn't in me to keep going till the end and something is not right with me nowadays. I had 2 revs and a rockstar, you would think I would be bouncing off the walls but had hardly any energy.

The staff at footwork always do an amazing job and it was nice one of the owners to announce the headliners lateness. I could only stay for two hours of his set..well almost. There was times when I enjoyed myself and times when I was looking at the clock thinking how long I could last.

hope all had a great time!

I really enjoyed my night last night. Much needed break from Techno.

Got in an Button was banging some great tunes.....unfortunately only got to hear 15-20mins of it.

Nitin was absolutely stellar (minus the beginning of his set which broke the tempo a little). He went back and forth from super sexy tunes to darkkkkkk and back to sexy.

Satoshi played a great set. enjoyed it all. Some moments like 2:50 - 3:10 were :eyespop: :eyespop: :eyespop: He definitely murdered my legs. He kinda felt like a japanese Digweed. Not too much expressions, made it look effortless, danced here and there. He had fun taking vids and pics of the crowd. I'd love to know what he used the iPad for.

The crowd was an absolute mixed bag. Some were there for the music, some to creep (yah you ing hipster with a scarf and beret creepin on everything that moved and spilling your cranberry juice on me), people who escape the senior home, boys from Stereo, plenty of asian (for once not @ a trance party :) sorry to generalize!), raver's and some good looking ladies.

Overall 9/10 and i'd def check out Satoshi again

awesome review man, was nice to hang out once again ;)

Quite sad i missed JB's set, i always it up because i live quite far so by the time i reach downtown its already at least midnight. I really enjoy his digdeep disco sessions though so i do recommend for everyone to check them out.
Satoshi didn't really impress me too much, i did like some stuff he was playing earlier but by the end it turned into another tech house type of night with not much interesting tunage for me at least. Nitin's set on the other hand was incredible, i was saying this to a few people that he should have played all night, amazing tune one after another which was actually acknowledged by joel on the mic, mixing was spot on and the vibe was ridiculous, nice dark techy and at times drummy music which was a perfect setup for satoshi. Nitin is slowly turning into my favorite local, especially for prime time music slot.
