Casual Collaborations

Hey there,

I'm thinking it would be fun to do some really informal collaborations. Anyone is welcome to join in anytime. The way I'm intending it to work is that people post 4 bar clips of just drum elements (kick, hihat, clap/snare, loops, other percussive elements). Next, anyone (except the person who created the drum loop) can add a bassline to it (which can be a single bass, or many bass layers). Basslines can stay on one note, or move around (if the progression ends up longer than 4 bars, just duplicate the 4 bar drum loop). Finally, to these drum and bass foundations, anyone (except the people who created the drums and basses) can add pads/ leads. This way, three people will have worked on any one loop, which may well result in something quite different to what people would normally do by themselves.

A few guidelines, to keep things a bit controlled:

1) The initial drum loops should peak no higher than -6 dBs. This will leave plenty of headroom for the other sounds to be added.
2) File format is 44.1kHz, 16 bit, WAV
3) Naming convention is BPM User Name 1 – User Name 2 – User Name 3. That is, initially a file may be called “138bpm Derail”. The person who adds a bass to it would call the file “138bpm Derail – BassFreakster”.
4) As stated above, once you've added a part to a collab, you can't add another part to the same collab.

I'll start off with a zip file with four of my drum loops in it:

Here are a couple of loops which have had basses added to them (by DJ Kile and Beatflux), ready for pads/leads to be added:

I'm happy to add contributions to the zip file, if people don't want to use file sharing sites. I'm also open to suggestions for improvement, if I've missed something fundamental and the idea won't work!

Regards
Fabian
