An Indian-born actor who appeared in the film The 40-Year-Old Virgin was sentenced to life in prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend more than 20 times when he stopped by her home and found her with another man. Shelley Malil -- who played Haziz, a co-worker of Steve Carell's character -- was sentenced after a jury convicted the actor of attempted premeditated murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The victim, Kendra Beebe, suffered punctured lungs and wounds to her neck, chest, back and arms in the 2008 attack.
Malil, 45, testified at trial that he visited Beebe in her San Diego home to apologize for taking personal items and to warn that he e-mailed sexually explicit photos of the couple to her co-workers. He stabbed her with a kitchen knife after finding her drinking with another man. They met through an online ad. Malil was repentant in court and stated his willingness to submit to any punishment to right the wrong. He will be eligible for parole in 12 years.
