Ya I can only imagine, and the snow machines won't work if the rain is just going to mess up the snow anyways.

My friend went a few weeks ago and said the conditions were bad. Slushy and hard snow everywhere...

The worst part of the storm hits tomorrow morning and will last through Wednesday. This part of the storm will lower the snow levels to 5,500 feet.

GREAT you guys are awesome this is all great information for me.

Ok so here's more info, I'm coming out there for about a week.

Dec 29 - Jan 6th

I'm staying in Hollywood with my buddy, hitting up digweed for NYE. Probably do sightseeing wed and thursday when I arrive. maybe alittle driving around on friday then just getting ready to party friday night.

Saturday wake up and recover then plan to head toward the mtns somewhere. I've been keeping an eye on Big Bear's weather, doesn't look great at all.

I'm all for hitting Mammouth Sat-Sun-Mon-Tues, but want to spend a day or two in LA before I dip back east on thursday. I'm good with one or two days, I've ridden a lot of big mtns so for me it sounds like Mammouth. I'm also very cool with the 1hr drive small mountain locals thing too, be it that I want to get a lot of west coast love in.

In terms of 'staying in bishop', could you point me directly at places to stay or that you've stayed at or people you know have stayed there before. I mean I'm not looking for slope-side resort status, it's just me and my buddy and we're out to cut some glades and find some fluff so we're cool with a bed, roof, and a shower. If mammouth, I'm predicting a 2 day riding session 2 night stay.

Appreciate all the help here peeps

I haven't stayed in Bishop but I've been told La Quinta Inn, Best Western and Holiday Inn in that order. This is from a friend who goes up there all the time and is quite particular about rooms so they must be ok. And they are a hell of a lot cheaper than anything worthwhile Mammoth (or so I've been told)

Forgot about Bishop. I would check this out. When I go up there's usually anywhere between 6 to 8 friends besides myself and we just stay at the Mammoth Resorts.

Yea it's just 2 of us so we're not trying to fit into a cabin or a condo or anything like that. Best Western sounds dope, I'll dig into it and talk it over with my buddy. I don't mind a 20-30min drive in the morning, this is shaping up to make me hit mammouth full on. Would love to get sunday and monday or even tuesday in if it's affordable to crash there. Definitely not trying to do slopeside.

So from Hollywood, depending on traffic and conditions etc, it's about 4-5 hrs so you'd say maybe 250+miles from LA? I think it's doable, I do day trips on a bus to Vermont from NYC although I'm not driving, time wise it's totally doable and allows me Tues/Wed to finish my chilling in LA.

Any more tips would greatly be appreciated, don't worry I'll be high the whole time but I'm sure you already knew that.

My buddies just came back from Mammoth on Thursday and said it was awesome. As far as lodging goes, it will probably be pretty expensive up there as it's right around the holidays. But you have your options: if you stay at one of the Mammoth Mtn resorts, which are usually slopeside, they throw in the lift tickets, or you could stay at the other hotels/motels close by. I've done Motel 6 up there, but I usually stay at the resort, it's infinitely nicer.

The drive is pretty short and quick. It's all flat driving, so no crazy windy roads. It usually takes us about 4-5 hours. You probably need chains now too.

I-5 north to State Route 14 north to US 395 north to State Route 203. About 4 to 5 hours, roughly 300 miles. You might need chains. Check with www.caltrans.com. It gives you up to date info on the drive.

You shouldn't have a problem with snow bunnies up there. Plenty to choose from.
