just wondering who here is into swimming?
the past couple months i became really interested in it, for health and other reasons..
..but i am 19 years old now..and have put it off this long..
but i finally want to learn..
so im asking is 19 years old to old to take swimming classes ?
i dont want to be in there with all 5-6 year olds..
and i also dont wanna take the early morning adult classes that are full of grannies..
and i would feel pretty embarrased going there on my own..
and at this age..can i still become good at it? i mean the desire to do it is there..i just feel like i put it off for so long..and never really tried it as a youth because i was scared of the water..
any tips or help will be appreciated. |

I was swimming by 2 years of age. It came completely naturally, I never really had to learn or take lessons. Then I went on to do it competitively until my late teens.
I think now that your ass fear of water is gone, you'll get the hang of it fairly quickly. I say go for it. There is nothing more enjoyable in the world as far as I'm concerned.

| I think you should go for it, and don't feel bad. I would call the pool and ask about lessons, ask what level they think you'd begin at (since you're obviously not going to start with the 2 yr olds..) and go from there. You will most likely start in a class with preteens.. but you'll probably learn fast since you've probably got more upper body strength. I finished my swim lessons and then went on to the level just below lifeguarding. You'll feel good about it once you've done it and it's a valuable skill to have. It's also relaxing to go by yourself for a lane swim and practice your strokes (lol, strokes..). |

swimmer here, triathlete as well...there isn't anything to be ashamed of when it comes to swimming, whether it's lessons in the pool with kiddies or with grannies, the fact that you're learning should only really matter to you.
end of the day, i would recommend hitting the Y as thats where you'll probably learn the best for the least amount of cash. you can get coaches and teachers on a personal level but it may run you a bunch of money.
I would also check your local university, sometimes they have weekend programs.
As much as I like running and cycling, there is just something completely different about the rhythm of stroking and breathing that disconnects your mind while in the pool. you get into this pace where your breathing comes natural with your body roll as you cut through the water...definitely do it. |
