Tough titties,

This is what I use (I don't put anything on the master until the track is finished):

1. Waves 10 channel EQ; roll off some highs, roll off some of the low
2. Waves stereo compressor
3. Waves L2

I'm not sure if what I am doing is right or wrong, but it gets loud enough and my waveform doesn't look like a brick when I analyze it.

Good enough for now I suppose...

Whats in-mix mastering?

Don't worry about compressor settings thats was newbies do.
Just spend a ton of money on an analog synth and you can
forget about equalizers and compressors.

This is correct, this is exactly what we (and all the pros) do. Make sure the compressor and limiter aren't actually adding any gain to your song though - these tools will make your song sound heaps better by just sitting in the signal path.

The plugins can be purchased at www.waves.com by the way!
