I haven't listened to this yet but I thought I'd give everyone the heads-up anyway. It's a free download from John.

edit: wtf, it's a wave file. How is that helpful for most people? It'll probably take SYSTEM-J eight weeks to download this. :p |

I've decided only in the past six months or so that I actually don't like the Digital Blonde's productions. It took me a long time to make up my mind, because they have all the right elements and a lot of people with good taste in music like them. This applies to productions where he collaborates with Fleming, too. I liked the Heaven & Hell album for the first few months after purchase, but now I wouldn't be that interested in listening to it the whole way through again. I didn't buy Angels & Demons, either.
Overall, I'm not sure what it is I don't like. It's like his tracks try too hard to be unique or something. Of course, that's a very admirable aim (or realistically, it's the aim), but still something bugs me. His mixing and mastering is one aspect I know for sure - I've always disliked that. It's particularly annoying because I've always been able to describe why I don't like a certain piece of music. Melodically, perhaps it's that he often seems to use jarring key changes (again, in an effort to be unique)? I don't know.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Fleming's debut album; his productions have been getting better and better, and he seems to have realised that the muddy mastering style isn't that popular. Nervous Breakdown and Temple of Spice were proof of that. I'm still loving those, and if his new album is full of that...then it'll be a contender for album of 2011 before the year's even started. I can say that confidently because Fleming will make sure it flows properly like an album should, rather than just being ten club bangers.
p.s. I don't like the Faithless remix all that much. That was the point of this post, ha. |

| The key changes are one of the reasons I love TDB productions. Makes them more unpredictable and less generic. |

| Both Digial Blonde and John used to be really good years ago but these days their music is as boring as the typical asot stuff |

I really don't think that's the aim of making music. If you're any kind of artist and your aim is simply to be different, you've got the whole process back to front. In fact, you'll probably never have any original expression at all, only awareness of the concept of original expression. |

I've always felt that most of the music of 00.DB (together and the comprising artists solo) lacks any real sense of intuition. It's compositionally sound and can hold its own on the dance floor against the pop gimmicks of so much music out there...but that's it. For me it's never been interesting to just listen to; there's hardly an artistic vision behind it (perhaps that's a bit harsh, however); no ethereal construct arising from its forms and textures. It's intelligent but it's not imaginative.
I am not saying that I wouldn't be shoving my shirtless ass to the front to witness their set at a festival, nor am I saying that I wouldn't be fist-pumping like an idiot. Their music is professional, energetic, and just plain bangin'. But I wouldn't call it art. I wouldn't listen to their music unwinding in my home or on a cruise down the highway, as I would L.S.G. or Sound Field. |

You can't make a post like that without then stating what you think the aim is. |
