i remember a few years ago here in brooklyn by my house there was a whole bunch of dead squirrels just laying around all over my neigborhood....turns out some lil kids were poisoning them
such a shame there must have been atleast from what i say 75 to 100 dead ones just laying all over

I blame chinamon and the lack of feral cats in the downtown core.

You can still order it in several restaurants in Toronto. They're called "Squab".

While growing up, any time we had no meat in the fridge, my mom would send my brother and I out for fresh air, and in the barn with our Pellet guns. We'd down two large-breasted pigeons for lunch.

Pigeons are quite tasty, much like cornish hens, and 100% grain fed if you shoot them near a farm.

unless you were extremely low on cash/trapped outside with no other means to get food, I do not understand the need to kill birds :conf: you couldn't make a trip to local groccerer to buy some chicken?

I understand that there are people who hunt and eat their catch, but this just sounds like it was done for the fun of it..

Oh c'mon Kris...

Theres no need to be a bleeding heart over a pigeon that is actually being eaten and not shot for fun...

Nothing wrong with what AJ and MANY ppl have done and still do...

It's called being at the top of the food chain...

:) I understand city folk have difficulty understanding life on a farm in the country.

On a farm, you grow what you eat, whether it's animals of vegetables. Nothing difficult or strange here. It's what all people on farms do, sorry for the news. Grocery stores in the country aren't really close driving either.

pigeons are stray birds lol not farm-bred birds..you grow farm birds like chickens and turkey, no?
don't you also learn how to stock up food for long period of times if you live on the farm?

I also understand people go hunting for food as well, but I quite honestly never heard of people using pigeons for food - did you kill and eat squirells and racoons as well?

Lol, those are rodents. You can't get squirels and raccoons in grocery stores. You CAN get squab in grocery stores. Squab = Pigeon. You won't find "Baby Cow" on a package of Veal in a grocery store, so I understand your surprise.

Squab is common in British, French and Asian cuisine. You won't find squab in all grocery stores, but it's out there! I'll be sure to get a picture of the package for you next time I see it.

There's even a deliscious squab recipe in a recent Globe and Mail: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life...article1755957/

Here's another article in Toronto Life featuring squab in toronto's fine dining restaurants: http://www.torontolife.com/features/mod-squab/

You should try it sometime. Farm raised grain-fed squab is not like the flying rats you're used to in the city.

oh! I see what you mean now - these are domestic birds, raised for their meat, just like chickens

for some reason I had an image of you chasing down wild pigeons with a rifle >.<

They were wild pigeons...

They are grain fed because they eat from the farm cause that's where they live...

You're lucky you're cute....

Well it's not really a chase. They don't move much when they're on top of the barn, or inside on the hey bale trolleys. They're an easy target. Barn pigeons are just like the dozen or so chickens just doing their own thing at my parents' or other pleasure farms. They're not in a pen or locked up, they go about as they please, but always return to the barn because that's where it's warm, and plenty of food to keep them happy. They're there for eggs, and when they get big and old, we chop their heads off drain them, then pluck them for dinner.

Barn pigeons are 100% Organic, grain-fed and free-range.

Farm life is very different from what many are used to in the city. Remind me to tell not to tell you the story about me full-arm inseminating one of our mares with a pipette full of $10,000 stallion semen.

nothing beats stories about horse fisting

$10,000 WTF? Is there like a stallion semen market? Do farmers bid on horse cum at farm auctions? Wow. :nervous:

No but seriously, I've never tried "squab" but it sounds tasty. Most grain-fed birds are pretty good I find.
