Actually, when I hear a track I like, the thing which sticks in my head all day mostly is the melody (unfortunately this happens also with tracks I don't like...).
Still I think I can't see one without the other.

i just read a David Mamet book where he claims that in music, the beat/bassline is much more important and memorable. But the book was about drama and story structure, so take it FWIW.
