hey guys, finally looking @ constructing a new rig, got most of everything down, but now im looking for what sort of soundcard i should have in the computer.

what do you think?

this is what my bro's picked out for me so far.

Intel Core i7 950_
Corsair AX750 Gold Power Supply_
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 Motherboard Rev2_
G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL8T-6GBRM (3x2GB) DDR3_
Xigmatek SD1283 Balder CPU Cooler_
PowerColor Radeon HD6870 1GB_
OCZ Vertex 2 3.5" 120GB E Series SSD_

what do you think would be best music production wise when selecting a new soundcard for my new rig?

help would be greatly appreciated

Or more importantly: what is your budget for the soundcard?

If no budget is given go Lynx or Apogee or something else around 2K :D

^^^ Yeah... Budget please... RME is a good compromise between performance and price generally speaking.

Also, do you really want that SSD?? They're about to drop in price in the next 6 months, I wouldn't get one at the moment. I'd actually hold out on a computer till after CES generally I think, there's going to be a lot of stuff announced then...

PS
I think that RAM might be overkill too. Its a bit expensive for not a lot better performance.

Actually, if its this one, I think it might be ok. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231304

you want external soundcard. Echo Audiofire 4 comes to mind :D

sorry i shouldve included the budget, i dont think id be able to fork out 2k for an apogee or lynx though... would probably have to go without a house/food and water for a while if i bought something like that hahaha.

i guess im looking for something 200-500 at most, something good that'll get me through most things without busting the budget.

@kitphillips, thanks for the info about the ram aswell, im not up to date on computer specs these days so i let my brother handle designing the new computer, i'll pass the information on to him :P

i heard external is the way forward these days, so i wanted to get some advice on what could be potentially a good buy

Cut out the SSD and spend an extra few hundred on the soundcard IMO. Get an RME and it'll last you forever. Probably.

The probably is there because they'll probably remove firewire as an option from all computers in the next 3 years, but its the same for any interface between your soundcard and the computer...
