Reference monitor suggestions for around $500

Well I decided to put the MIDI keyboard on hold, my computer desperately needs replacing and I think while I'm at it I'm going to finally spring for a pair of monitors, since a keyboard's not going to help me with my mixing at all and that's probably one of my weakest points

Technically I really don't have a limit, I'll save up for whatever it costs me to get good monitors, but I'm hoping to spend somewhere around $500-800.

I'd just Google product reviews and make my decision there but I figured I'd ask you guys if you know of any monitors that'd specifically be good for the kind of music I make, ie extremely layered uplifting trance. I feel like if I get monitors with any significant amount of coloring in the tone it's just going to throw me off, I need something that's going to let me find a space for the excessive amount of layers I put into my tracks and have that translate to most other systems as much as I can reasonably expect it to. I don't want to get monitors that make my tracks sound amazing but sound ty on other systems, that's what I have headphones for.

I've heard pretty much nothing but good things about KRKs, I'm leaning towards those, but I want to get a few opinions first.

Thanks

Try and track down some Yorkville YSM1P's, Canadian made if you can.

I have 4 of these sweet monitors and love every second I hear em :D

The new ones aren't the same, so you are taking a risk buying the older ones., just a heads up that they are great.

Hmm, $1200 for a pair of them? Jeez. Reviews seem good though, thanks

I've never heard of Yorkville YSM1Ps and I don't see much of anything on Google as far as buying old ones, that might be a struggle

I'll be predictable and suggest the HS80s in that pricerange ($700)

They are a huge leap ahead of the KRK RP range (which I previously had) and my mixes took a leap too as soon as I bought them.

I'm using them in a huge untreated reflective room and they're facing down the wrong wall, but I'm still happy with what comes out the other end. I'm looking forward to using them in a treated space for sure.

And I'll be predictable and agree with you.

Oh, , I completely forgot about HS80's, yeah I've heard great things about those. Scott (immersiv) suggested them to me and stylistically we're pretty similar musicians, so that's a plus.

How do they compare to KRK vxt6's? Those are the only monitors I've actually gotten a chance to really listen to, I don't have much of anything to compare them with. Anyone have experience with both?

I've not used the VXT6s but the VXT8s were ok. Can't say i've compared them to the HS80s though.

The VXT6s are $200/pair more than the HS80s though, which would tempt me into looking at Adam A5Xs as well.

If you're going to get monitors that around the $500 range, also get a secondhand PC setup that has a subwoofer for under $100, not because it'll have the best subwoofer, but it'll give you some needed bass reference.

I personally prefer not to use a subwoofer, the bass reference you get with it is kind of tricky.
