gift exchanges

Last year at my office gift exchange I put a lot of time and thought shopping for the perfect gift for the co-worker I randomly pulled. When I got my gift I was kinda excited. I opened it up and it was a 'used' Irish ballad CD as well as a 'used' Bruce Springsteen CD circa '87. I have no interest in either. I also got a box of tea.

So this year after vowing not to participate, I caved in under peer pressure. This morning one of my co-workers called me aside and said she 'forgot' my gift at home but would give it to me Monday. And of course my office makes a big production out of it where you have to describe the person you chose and what they mean to you... And of course right before the exchange started this co-worker suddenly and mysteriously 'left' the party.

Am I an or should I quit participating in office gift exchange?

Why the hell do companies do this? Do they think it's going to somehow bring everybody together? When in fact it makes things more awkward.

This kind of only happens in U.S.

I would have so sarcastically been like, "Oh great, used CDs of Irish and 80's music, how nice."
