Have a question about processors

First of all, thanks to everyone who's been helping me out with my recently aquired GAS. I'm in the process of shopping for a new computer to replace my horribly outdated off-the-shelf Dell and I think I have everything I need figured out, but I just hit a wall with deciding what processor to get.

I've heard almost nothing but good reviews about the Intel i7. I'd be getting the i7-870 quad core, 3.06 ghz. Only problem is, it's about $100 more expensive than an AMD Phenom II X6

I understand what that means, and I know the six-core isn't much of an advantage since the i7 can process up to 8 threads at once even though it's quad-core. The i7 is clearly a better processor but both seem very good and after reading up on reviews, it says under most circumstances (most related to gaming unfortunately) the average user won't tell any difference in speed.

Long story short, AMD Phenom II X6 2.7 ghz vs Intel i7-870 Quad Core 3.06. Is it worth spending an extra $100 on the Intel or am I not going to see any change in processing speed when I'm using FL? If it depends on any of the other specs I'll share what I'm considering, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice. I know $100 isn't a huge difference but if I can avoid spending it on something that's not going to be worth it, I'd rather just go with the Phenom.

Thanks again

I remember a recent thread where mister Rox was about to cry when he found out the AMDs were a waste of money and lacked performance increase on his earlier setup.

So probably worth the money then? Alrighty.

I figured most of the needs for a gaming setup would be the same for a producer's setup, aside from sound card > graphics card instead of the other way around. Though I bet producing goes through a lot more processes at the same time than running CoD or something.

Thanks.

The next gen i7 chipsets (sandybridge) are due soon and the 870 is the really old 1156 version chipset so i'd say don't bother with that one right now.

The general rule of thumb is that Intel CPUs do better on audio and video work to due the way they process multiple threads and AMD can compete in gaming performance by simple ghz grunt per dollar. This of course is a vastly over simplified account of things but generally true.
Kysora
Oh, yeah I guess that makes sense. Considering the AMD was cheaper even at higher clock speeds..

Is there any word of when the new sets will be out? I kinda need this computer soon.

Fixed.

Basically, I wouldn't buy intel right now unless you get them for a steal.

The great thing about AMD is that you can use their new processors on ancient motherboards, which means very cheap upgrades.

On that note, Intel basically did a thing with its retail affiliate employees by getting rid of i7 970s (12 thread) at a great price (internal buying and reward for completing training, etc). Due to that you will be able to find a bunch of them in the GTA on sale on various sites as these employees are getting rid of them. Not sure where OP is currently from but worth a note, might be the same story elsewhere.

All in all just a heads up you can grab one easily and sealed for $500 maybe 550 worst case. That cpu will future proof you for a while, its quite incredible. look up its specs and compare compare them to the bottom end i7s and then with the Xeon line and you will quickly see the value ;)

Anyways its worked great for me, just got the computer booted up today :D

What the hell is GAS? I know you guys aren't referring to my farts. I keep seeing you guys mentioning it.

GAS: Gear Acquisition Syndrome

I'm under the impression that AMD have caught up a little bit with intel, especially in the desktop arena. The i7 is a safe bet and will cane almost anything else out there... BUT the AMD might be ok... Its really a question of whether you want the tried and tested awesome chip, or the "possibly might be ok" chip. Either way, I think I'd probably wait for the new intels if at all possible.

This seems like awesome advice too. 12 cores would destroy any audio task you could possibly throw at it:eyes:
