Its about time someone did something about this discrimination. If black people can use this word, everyone can. Anything short of that is racism.
I personally wish that NO ONE would be allowed to use it. But as long as some people are allowed to, everyone should be able to. |

This is bull! If a book has been deemed a literary masterpiece, then it should be left as is. |

| I have zero objection to the word if it is being used as part of a statement of fact or in historical context; rather than being used as a racial epithet. For example; I see no offence in stating - "replacing the word 'nigger' with 'slave' in Huckleberry Finn seems to me a poor editorial decision, as the use of the word is correct for the period in which the book is set and matterial to illustrating the social dynamic that existed." |

| Is no one here going to address the double standard of the first article? About how the guy was fired for being a white guy saying that word but black people can say it at will? I think this is a very important matter in this country as well. |

I don't think the article actually points to a double standard (not denying that one exists). The article makes no mention of any other person using the word nigger, colleagues taking offence, complaining to management, and the offending individual continuing to employ the objectionable word. See, the thing here is that he wasn't fired for saying the word nigger; rather, he was fired because his use of the word caused offence resulting in a complaint to management, leading to Mr. Burlington being instructed to discontinue use of the word and ultimately to termination when he repeatedly employed the term. It's not as though he said "does that mean we can finally say the word 'nigger'" and was immediately fired... he was fired because he was continuously and repeatedly offending people. Whether or not people taking offence is a justified reaction is immaterial from the employer's perspective; the law necessitates they act to prevent behaviour of an employee that offends other employees and usually the measure of whether or not something is offensive is if someone claims to be offended. If I had an employee who did this I would have no choice but to fire them as well. |
