Binaural wave patterns won't get you trippy, high or any of such kind.
The only thing you might expect is at best a sense of calmness, focus or alertness depending on what wavelength you're being exposed to.
But you are certainly not going to hallucinate or freak out (you will freak out if you are an immature kid wanting to get views on Youtube though.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binaural_beats
A funny mathematical analysis of the phenomenon of audio beats as a form of stimulus affecting the body reveals that a beat centred around 140-150bpm matches the frequency of Theta brainwaves. Theta waves are common during dream sleep and meditation and have frequencies between 4–7 Hz. Often music with a beat of 140-150bpm also uses sub beats made by basslines, or percussions, like the standard in-between hihat you often find in 4-4 dance patterns. This creates a beat of 300bpm out of 150bpm for example.
If you divide 300 beats per minute into seconds you get 5 beats per second. That almost matches the mid value for the theta waves perfectly.
So when Goa Gil says dance is "active meditation" he is actually not being entirely unscientific. And since this guy usually plays his trance around 160bpm he manages to match this ideal mid value even better.
As synchronizing to this frequency will make you actively meditate you will become creative, expressive and focused.
Consider also that the recent years the trance music have both gone down in beats per minute as well as in creativity and appeal. Can it be that the lowering of tempo unconsciously affected audience as well as producers in a negative way?
No, i would not go that far as to make such claim ;) But beats of 150bpm was way more common back in the 90s when the scene was gold, but things wear out in the end anyway. Slow tempo IS ING BORING though. |

I agree with you whirly, I would hate low BPM music to be the peak of the night. That being said, I do think lower BPM music has its place though and can be done right.
For example, J00F's latest set "The Deeper Side" would be great for transitioning into some higher BPM stuff and would work on getting the party kicking early/mid night (to bad there are so few people making good high BPM stuff nowadays)
Seems nu goa has been getting pretty strong lately, that I am thankful for. Other than your music Whirloop I can't name much in the way of quality high BPM stuff in the progressive trance/psy scenes :(
I appreciate both low and high bpm stuff, but I think there is a serious void of quality 140+ bpm progressive/psy tunes :( |

That frequency is actually really close to the resonant frequency of the eyeball. You might start hallucinating |

However there is something more dangerous and that could be easily introduced but that it is not advisable neither , at 18hz i believe it's the frequency where your eye balls vibrate so playing 10hz sounds on a real big subwoofer makes people to see ghosts and any other weird things (it is said that in any haunted house there are vibrations from the earth at this frequency and after being a few minutes there you start to see things, everything has an explanation if you ask me and i find this more probable than your grandma coming back from the death to kill you because you didn't eat your peas) , their eyes trick them , the problem is that before this happens although you are not hearing the noise you are "feeling" it so you'll experiment nauseas, disorentation , even fever... if people relate this to your music isn't a good thing, is it? |
I believe this is infrasound that you are referring to.

| In haunted areas the 18hz frequency doesn't have to come from the earth. In fact I think the origin of this theory was that a scientist thought he saw a ghost because a fan was generating that frequency. |

Yes, in the link Teezdalien has provided this is explained, not necessary from the earth but in an abandoned house the source is probably a natural phenomenon than something related to technology.
Well in addition as wikipedia says this infrasounds are used in horror films to induce true fear. Have you ever tryed to watch a horror film without sound or with very lowered sound?? It is even funny instead of terrorific, they intentionally raise the volumes at some points and use a combination of very high pitched sounds like violin pizzicatos or a really deep bassline at some points (which is playing loud but you can't hear it very well), if you like things related to sound you should check some films, they use very original tricks sometimes.
BTW here you have infrasounds:

This sounds aren't dangerous unless played at a really high volume but still if you start feeling upset or even start hallucinating (i see i am introducing some people into digital drugs lol) you should stop listening. |
