| I used Fruity for a long time before switching to Ableton. All of the most popular DAWs (including Fruity) are capable of enabling you to produce professional quality results. They have almost all of the same functions, although they way you might do something in one might take a few more/less steps in another. It's all about mastering the tools you have and practicing! |

this belongs in production studio
but since it's here-
Propellerheads Reason if you want everything you'll ever need for producing in one program. That being said, some consider that it's main problem. Since it has everything you need, you're not allowed to use external VSTs. Most would agree, however, that that doesn't matter. Like I said, Reason is basically everything you will ever need.
Ableton Live if you want something that you can also DJ with (not great but it works), is great for working with samples (the best, imo), and is great for live performances (hence the name Live). Ableton Live is meant to be used with only ONE monitor (most DAWs work best with 2+), as such the interface is easy to navigate.
Steinberg Cubase is a solid, professional platform. Learning curve is steep (or so I've heard) but it is well worth it.
Image-Line Fruity Loops is a pattern based sequencer. It's great for beginners because of it's simplicity and easy to use interface. This does not, however, mean that it's ONLY for beginners. FL Studio, like any other DAW, can produce professional results.
Apple Logic is basically Cubase for Mac. It is a professional platform available only to those who use Mac computers.
Cockos Reaper is a lot like FL Studio, except it's cheaper and is NOT pattern based. It is another beginner platform, useful for those with a small budget.
Avid Pro Tools is basically the standard for any professional recording studio. 'Nuff said.
Cakewalk Sonar is a lot like Pro Tools in that it leans a bit more towards recording. It is also cheaper than Pro Tools.
(these are only the most common DAWs, there are more)
I'm not like an expert on DAWs or anything, so some of my descriptions might be off. Most of them are pretty good summaries though. In the end there is no "best DAW". The best DAW is the one that you like and are the most comfortable with. So your best option is not to take advice on which to buy. Instead, try out a demo version of any DAW that interests you and then choose the one that suits you best. There is no "one size fits all". |

| if you have a mac use logic, many good producers are using it so should be a good daw. I've heard good feedback about Reason specially if you want to produce trance. I use Fl studio, is easy and intuitive and does the same as the others, the default content (samples, effects etc...) is not very good but you can get good replacements some of them even free. |

| I know you didn't ask, but for a soundcard I'd definitely recommend the new Digidesign M-Box. I'm probably looking at getting one in the next couple of months. |

| I've used both FLStudio and Cubase for a number of years. I prefer FLStudio more than Cubase, but I still really like Cubase for a lot of things. |

| If you have a mac then go for logic. Its the best DAW and isn't too expensive. |

Get Pro Tools and then Rewire logic, ableton and reason into it.
then you have everything.
but really what you should do is just play a few chords, make a simple melody and pay someone to engineer it proper |
