Got a question? Put it here. He's at least 15% more accurate than your local weatherman, and doesn't have to shout over some fancy helicopter.

Will, I'm supposed to fly into NYC (LGA) Friday night. What are the chances of this happening/on-time?

weather is not about "chance" it's about probabilities ;)

your probability of getting into LGA this friday night are probably better than getting into it tonight or tomorrow.....

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER

EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD...
AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

edit,

really, because of the delays on tonight/tomorrow, impacts will be felt across the country until the weekend. so while the weather might be very cooperative on friday, the backlog of delays may still keep you from getting there on time.

La Nina.

lol no seriously though the last storm was a perfect combo of low level moisture and a really strong cold front. lots of upper level divergence from a really strong jet streak, causing significant amounts of lift. shoot up really warm moist air into a really cold atmosphere and BOOM! SNOOOOWWWWW!!!!!!!

oh, and freezay-ing [chocolate] rain if you have multiple freezing levels in the boundary layer.
shaw
Oh dear. What have I unleashed?

Will, why do temperatures vary so much more in Texas than up north? I'm talking about highs/lows over the course of a single day. For instance, we had a few days last week with lows in the high 30s...and highs in the mid 70s. I remember one, in particular with 37-78. The same day, NYC was 26-38.

I don't remember anything like this from Chicago. If it was cold, it was cold. Hot, hot.

depends on the system that was approaching. if it was a normal low that came off of the rockies and dropped down into the midwest and then eastward, it would affect the NE/KS down to TX area more than when it moves across the eastern seaboard. usually ahead of such systems, winds are out of the south (warm) and then as the low approaches with a trailing cold front behind it with winds out of the north (cold).

also depends on the time of year. in the spring/fall, the jetstream (which kinda "Steers" the weather) can dip down really far, much more than in winter or summer.

also la nina.

I'm talking about over the course of one day, though, and repeating--the day after that, it was back to the 30s inn the morning again, with the same 30s-60s pattern every day for a week or two. That would take one hell of an anomaly in your example, no?

South Florida is pretty hot right now. I hate it.

How does that make you feel, Will?
