That's a really interesting quote... but it makes me wonder, how does that fit in with the stuff that both he and Diggers are playing today? I mean, that sounds exactly like the type of venue where there current stuff would sound most "appropriate" anyway.

I think it's more or less that after their huge surge of popularity in the late 90's / early 00's, they've basically been pigeonholed into that "throbby prog" sound, even though it's waaayyy dated today.
They're sets in the early 90's, and even mid 90's, seemed to be much more varied than the type of stuff they were playing later on, and I think that people have just been expecting the same things from them for a decade now. So they just do their thing.
I'm probably completely wrong though, SYSTEM-J would definitely know more than I would.

I don't really know what Sasha is playing these days, so I can't really comment. Whenever I see tracklists it just looks like really big room prog-tech stuff, except for that spell about a year ago when he was touring Australia and everyone was claiming he was playing melodic trancey stuff again. Because I don't follow what he's doing this could all be unfair, but to me it just seems like he doesn't really care anymore. Now the Ableton thing is no longer a novelty, what exactly has Sasha done style-wise in the last half a decade? You look at him in the 90s and the progress he made in any five years (1990-1995, 1995-2000, for example) was massive. He was constantly pushing his sound, making progressive live up to the name.
Even the "Twilo sound" changed a lot between 1997 and 2001. I personally prefer that earlier stuff, it all got a bit too minimalist and dark by the end for me.

People have always expected things from them. Sasha was a superstar by 1991, he was having Top 20 hits through the '90s. You still hear stories of him turning up at Gatecrasher in front of a thousand pilled-up cyber-kids all baying for trance and playing a four hour breaks set instead.
