Where to party in Tokyo

Ok, I know some of the people here on the West Coast board have been to Tokyo (or live there), so I need some advice.

I'll be in Japan in May for a friend's wedding. I'm super excited since I haven't been there since high school.

Anyway, now that I'm an old man in my upper 20s, just going to arcades isn't going to cut it. I want to check out Tokyo's club scene, which I assume is legendary.

EDM is preferable, but more mainstream is fine, too. I doubt I'll just go to one place. I'm going to be with a big group.

I've heard of ageHa, obviously, and it sounds like a lot of fun. What would you guys recommend?

Also, if any Tokyo promoter wants to throw me on as an opening DJ and put "Los Angeles DJ" on the flier to generate buzz, let me know. :)

(I'll be spending some time in Kyoto and Kochi, too, but my schedule won't be as open in those places. If you know any good spots there, though, let me know!)

ageHa @ Studio Coast - Tokyo

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AgeHa

ageHa (also as 'AGH') is a nightclub and event space in Shin-Kiba, Kōtō, Tokyo, Japan. The venue is also known as Studio Coast. The word Ageha is Japanese for 'Swallowtail butterfly'. The club's name has recently been presented in the 3-letter-version 'AGH' in capital letters, for instance on the official staff shirts. If the three letters are pronounced separately in the German alphabet, they are pronounced as "ah-ghey-huh", which is similar to the Japanese pronunciation of the club's name.

The club has a large main dance floor, chill out space, open terrace with pool, an outdoor dance tent. It is on the waterfront in eastern Tokyo's reclaimed industrial district. The club has a capacity of over a thousand people. The club opened in December, 2003.

The club has hosted DJs such as Hernan Cattaneo, Armin van Buuren, Deadmau5, Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish, Markus Schulz Tiësto, Paul van Dyk, John Digweed, Fatboy Slim, Dave Seaman, Xpress 2, Don Patrick, Santos, Space Cowboy, David Guetta and many more.

Japanese DJs who have played there include: Yasutaka Nakata of capsule, Ken Ishii, Tsuyoshi Suzuki (a.k.a. Numanoid), Disco Twins, Ko Kimura, Daishi Dance, and Yoji Biomehanika.

Lounge DJs who have played at Ageha include Japanese event organizer and DJ Shibachoff, and the Irish & Japanese duo Tokyo Sluts.

Entry costs depend on the line-up.

Ageha runs a free bus service at night from near the east exit of Shibuya station in Tokyo. The bus takes 30–45 minutes. There is also a free return bus service.

There are also a number of trains that go to Shin-Kiba Station, including the Keiyo Line from Tokyo Station, as well as the Yurakucho Line.

About once every two months, Ageha hosts a gay dance event now called Shangri-La.

You should talk to Rocio (Neogaia). She's an LA TA and she was studying in Tokyo earlier this year.

I am living in tokyo right now.

Mostly all House and tech here.

And yes, Womb and Ageha will be your best bet. Here are couple of tips.

Some clubs don't open till 11pm. Alcohol is expensive but served 24hrs.

But public transportation shuts down at mid night. So if you are planning to going to a club, get ready to stay out for an entire night. Taking a cab is very expensive here in Tokyo.

Tokyo is huge so decide carefully where you want to book your hotel. Getting from Point A to Point B will be a project if you don't have a guide with you.

Womb is closer in town, while Ageha is slightly further away. But it ageha has been bringing some pretty good DJ's in the past.

Hope this helps.

Still shocked how they actually shut down all their lines in a city that massive!

And $7 just for a flag drop (Y680, right?) in cabs is REDONKULOUS. But hey, the back doors open and close by themselves, all ninja style!

Worth the price right there!

Anyhow, I haven't been to a club in Tokyo in years. Back in the day, Womb blew me away though. The atmosphere was great, too!

I love Japan.

Thanks for the advice! I knew the trains shut down early, but don't they re-open at 4am? or am I remembering that wrong?

I've also heard there is a shuttle bus from Shibuya to ageHa. Is this true?

That's surprising that there isn't much trance. Not too long ago Japan was WAY more into trance than the US was. I guess times change.

Remember the Ayu-trance days? -sigh-

Awesome shots, as usual.

Womb's crowd definitely looks older with a lot more Europeans. Very cool-looking spot. It looks like the perfect venue for tech.

ageHa looks more mainstream... but I kind of like that.

Hopefully I can go to both. :)

Wow when?
jimji1005
Trains opens around 5:45 to 6am depending on which line and company.
Usually when I go out, I would park myself in a Manga/internet store for 2 or 3 hrs before going to the trains. Its cheap, has soda etc, quiet, has internet and tons of comics for you to read.

But Tokyo is really about the food. Its ass kicking good.
