I'm really just looking for anything in general relating to largely but not entirely EDM. I've never read any books on the topic, wether it be a history of rave culture, a DJ/producers (auto)biography, and I haven't watched any music related documentaries either. So throw em at me! What should I be checking out to help educate me on the music I have spent years loving and researching. I'm originally from a small town in the middle of Canada, as in completely removed from anything related to the birth of the scene and it's development.
I would love to read up on:
- Some DJs who've got an interesting story to tell
- and more specifically I'm wondering if there is any material relating to the role that mainstream music has played on North American culture in the last century and how it has evolved. How culture influences mainstream music, and how mainstream music influences culture and so on.
I love reading about mainstream and counter-culture critiques and ideas, and the whole idea of changing trends and how "cool" exists and functions, so bringing music into the whole picture would be very interesting...
Thanks for the help.

One of the best I've seen to date:
Pump Up The Volume - the youtube link a few posts up - is decent enough, but aside from detailing the early Chicago years, totally neglects the deeper end of the genre in favour of more popular acts such as Daft Punk.
Also check High Tech Soul - The Creation of Techno Music. Feel free to take bathroom breaks whenever Derrick May opens his mouth.
The Slices special on Richie Hawtin's actually a pretty good watch - lucky guy had a dad who was a total gearhead and a mom who'd handle the door and sell t-shirts at the raves he held.
Dub Echoes is a must watch for anyone into EDM, imho.
