Yeah, but the Japs love the net.
You're a special case, Marcus :o |

Not really. You decide on having a lack of social interaction, technology does nothing on its own. |
Not that I disagree with you, but many people view the internet as a substitute for (physical) social interaction. In fact, most people prefer it that way. |

| When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought it would be about a mother taking her children off of life support, and letting them die. I just couldn't figure out why it was for 6 months, I sat for a while and tried to think why on earth someone would kill someone for else for 6 months. I mean, you don't really need to throw in the 6 months, they're already dead. So it's like, forever. I was so focused on finding the reason that I completely forgot I had no idea what the thread was actually about. |

Which would you choose: give up sex for six months, or give up Internet for six months? |

Electrically powered teenagers. They come standard with 120 volt plugs. |
Right, but installing an Ethernet PCIe card is such a pain in the ass.
Literally. |

| So you have to plug in to save their lives? No wonder priests are always doing that! |

I doubt I could give up tv. I enjoy sports and history shows too much.
With computers, I'm spending far less time online at home since I sit in one all day at work.
I don't have a smartphone either, and don't really want the internet in my pocket.
The more I find that the internets push their way in to daily life, the more I feel myself backing away from it and questioning how much is enough?
Ultimately, it's all about striking a personal balance with the technology since it is certainly here to stay and key to our lives as we know them now |

Would you be willing to give up cable, internet, and your cell phone for 6 months? Is it worth it? Would it benefit you or not? |
No, no, and no. I'd jump at the chance to ditch my cell phone, but I doubt that my employer would be willing to go along with the idea.

It would be nice if spending less time on the internet meant spending more time with my family and friends; however, the internet is really the only contact I have with the overwhelming majority my family and friends, since very few of them live in the same geographical area as myself, and we are all far too busy to travel such long distances more than a few times a year.
If you ask me, this whole idea sounds like the inane whining of a bunch of spoiled brats. As far as I'm concerned, they can deprive themselves of water and oxygen for six months next. |

Personally, I don't see the point of giving it up entirely. Many of our daily routines rely on the internet, and communication is practically impossible for some people without a cell phone. However, all of us could probably do with less time spent on the internet and more time with our family or friends.
What say you, c0r? There was a thread similar to this a long time ago, but I'm not gonna dig it up. |
I don't have cable (as most of you know), and not having a cell phone would be more of a nuisance than anything, especially since I don't have a land-line. I rarely use it for anything other than important calls and the occasional text.
The internet on the other hand... it has become an extension of my life. Living on the other side of the country from my family and many of my friends makes communication limited. Without social networking sites, I wouldn't be able to stay in contact with the majority of them.
Additionally, as a student, the internet has become an extremely valuable academic tool. All of my lecture notes, assignments, grades etc. are posted online, and it's awesome for research and supplementary material.
Without a television to kill time, I rely heavily on the internet for things to do (however, I will admit that I do now watch some TV shows straight from the TV network websites or wherever else I can find them).
I could go without all of these things for a short period of time (when I am not a student,) but I don't think I could go for 6 months. Without the internet, I would feel very disconnected from my family and friends and I think that would bother me.
With that being said, I certainly could benefit from less internet time and I am sure my academic performance would improve. |

| The longest I've gone with no phone or internet was about two weeks. I honestly do not care about the television, seeing I can download everything. Also I really don't need a cellphone seeing I can sms with Google Voice. One of the only reasons I use the internet, is to keep up to date with the news. |
