Edit: Could be a matter of taste really. Interestingly, my favorite season was season 2, which was the most "white" and kind of Sopranos'esque (the Greek/Sobotka storyline). I fond the focus on the decline and fall of Ziggy/Frank Sobotka etc. more interesting than any overarching theme of police corruption and political backstabbing.

best line in the show comes from season 2.

"3 Polaks at the table, 4 opinions" (paraphrasing) I laughed for a good week after that one. I'm definitely watching this show again.

As for Sopranos...it might've had more epic moments, but The Wire wasn't even trying to present any "epicness". It was all about character and plot development, and imo it trumps the Sopranos in that regard. Nobody in Sopranos can hold a candle to guys like Bodie, Marlo, Omar, Bunk, McNulty or even that bald dude that appeared on Entourage. I actually really enjoyed how his story developed and intertwined with the everyone elses towards the end of the show.

Man HBO has really gone downhill.

Just finished it recently and my penis got teary eyed.

Will watch again when I'm good, ripe, molting, and begging for it.

one of the best shows ever made, easily

season 2 is very average imo, but everything else is top notch

yeah same here I guess, the yo yo gangster dealing crack thing got old at the end...

I'm still undecided if Sopranos or The Wire was better, do we need to label one or the other?? Both are friggin amazing! (too bad they stopped).

i laughed my ass off when watching the recent episode of it's always sunny, where dennis from the wire (the guy who starts the gym) guest stars as one of the dudes at frank's sketchy party. think one of his only lines was "we gon' set it OFF" when they blast the speakers all coked out.

snoop is faking crazy.

Apparently shes just playing herself and is a gangster in real life.

I heard some crazy like she got put in jail at the age of 14 for killing another woman. Then the character who plays omar met her at a bar and was like "yo, you wanna get paid for just playin yourself?"...insane.

The Wire and The West Wing stand alone at the top of television drama for me.

Season 2 of The Wire was probably my favorite, as well, but mainly because it depicts a lot of dillemmas about urban decay that I'd never thought about. What I love about the show is how it depicts social issues so baldly, without any frills or editorializing. It comes at issues of crime, justice, inequality, from all angles, and captures exactly what's so messed up about many American cities - there are so few good guys left.

It was seriously eye-opening to see the lack of utility so many in the Series had - there were so many young kids compelled to get in the game when all they wanted was to get out (Wallace, D'Angelo, etc.) and so many more only in it to prove something (Bodie, Marlowe, etc.).

The storyline about the Sobotkas was the most immediately resonant to me, which is why I think that series was my favorite. Frank was in a position where he was watching everything he had slip away despite his best efforts, so he made a few bad choices and everything he cared about paid the price. The brilliance of the show is that it's hard to condemn somebody like Sobotka even though his choices led to the deaths of more than a few, the destruction of a family, and rampant crime. Omar too - the guy is brutal and ruthless, yet he's a popular hero. The Wire is a show that made me question a lot of assumptions about society.
