Oktave is proud to return to New York for an event featuring one of Los Angeles’s finest and most sought after techno acts - Droid Behavior’s RAÍZ. New York techno icon Taimur Agha, of BLK Market Membership fame, will grace the decks as well, along with Oktave resident Jeff Derringer of Chicago. The event takes place Saturday, January 29th at National Underground in Manhattan.
Raiz
Los Angeles born and bred, brothers Vangelis and Vidal Vargas were raised in the ‘80s on a steady diet of Latin freestyle, electro, and new wave that pervaded their urban environment. By the mid ‘90s they were sampling LA’s underground club scene and heavily researching electronic music’s roots. After years of influence they began to express their musical vision through their own recordings and performances. Vidal and Vangelis eventually found common ground with producer/performer Drumcell, and in 2002 they formed the Droid Behavior event production group and record label. Since its inception, the Droid-produced “Interface” party series has hosted and debuted such artists as Chris Liebing, Surgeon, Speedy J, DBX, Modeselektor,
Sandwell District and countless others.
As producers, Vangelis and Vidal have released and licensed original music and remixes under various aliases (most notably Acid Circus and Raíz) on the Droid Recordings imprint as well as respected labels Historia y Violencia, Tora Tora Tora, Enemy Records and Timefog. Their music has been charted, played and supported by Richie Hawtin, Speedy J, Chris Liebing, Ellen Allien, Adam Beyer, Jonas Kopp and more. Their intense and inspiring performances have placed them alongside major players Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Magda, and Claude Von Stroke at undergrounds, festivals, after-hours, and club nights from North America to Berlin.
Raíz fully harness the capabilities of Traktor, Ableton, and Maschine technology to create a thick blend of Detroit techno and house. They take cues from years of classical training to infuse dynamic musical expression with a delicate balance of mixing board acrobatics and symbiotic intuition. Years of production experience inform their Live PA/Digital DJ hybrid approach, which uses each track’s core essentials to form a narrative arc for every unique set.
Taimur Agha
One of NYC's most active DJs, Taimur is a major force shaping the scene. His deep DJ sets are a late night staple in New York's underground. Although you can hear influences from the many artists that Taimur has worked with, it is obvious that he has shaped his own sound over the past years. You can catch Taimur opening, headlining, and closing many of the best parties around the US. With partner Fahad, he has helmed the Blk|Market Membership parties for the last 4 years, producing over 100 events that have hosted some of techno's biggest names and brightest upand- comers at secret locations, Love, Cielo, Bar 13 and more.
When Taimur is not busy DJing and putting together his events, he can be found working at Halcyon record shop in Brooklyn NY. He is an integral part of the team, as he is the main music buyer for the house/techno/disco/electro genres. His love for digging to find those extra special records is his biggest passion.
Just recently Taimur has become the musical director and a resident DJ at New York’s newest nightclub, District 36.
Jeff Derringer
Jeff Derringer is the co-founder, creative director and resident DJ at Oktave. The Oktave project has seen Jeff host and play alongside techno’s cutting edge: Silent Servant, Cio D’or, Claro Intellcto, Par Grindvik, Samuli Kemppi, DVS1 and many more. Jeff’s latest EP will be released on December 17th via Perc Trax, featuring remixes by Claro Intelecto (Modern Love) and Iori (Prologue). |
