how a good mix can change your tracks

most of you for sure have probably think about this, how a good mix, can improve a track... and how a bad can ruin and turn good ideas into rubish...

people is allways trying to make great sounds, that basic, everyone is giving their best and what they know...
but for some reason, there are allways things you think you can improve, since its very dificult to make a perfect track, even more if your a begginer and you dont have the right material or the knoledge to do it

im opening this topic, because recently i started to remix my all "old" material... old tracks i had in database that were produced some years ago and the point about this is that now i can compare between mix“s, compare how i did improve, and how diferent it can sound a tune when mixed in a diferent way, perhaps more "professional" or with better conditions

im going to show you 2m30 of both tracks, the original and the remix

the original was produced in my home studio in 2007, at that time i was using quitte similar studio gear, except the monitors were diferent and the room was still not acustically treated...

so.. track states: Original version

Home studio (still not acustically treated)
Daw used: FLstudio 7
Audio device: M-audio F410
Monitors: Alesis M1 620

Cyan (2007) by Richard at Soundcloud

and recently like i said, i am remixing my all old tunes, trying to refresh them, i have many toons with ideas i like alot, that somehow, i think today i am in better conditions to make them sound better...

and now it sounds like this...

Cyan (rmx preview 2011) by Richard at Soundcloud

the track was rebuild in similar conditions, barely the same structure and instruments, but know i mix in diferent way, and i have some improvements in my studio...

my studio is now acusticaly treated, and i own a pair of Dynaudio bm5a wich are consideraly more acurate than alesis

but does this slight or big improvement (?) was caused by a simple studio gear changes, or the major diference is in how i mixed??

because, after i adquire knoledge and improve my self, now today mix in a totaly diferent way that i was duing in 2007

for starting, in 2007, i wasnt using a single chanel, for each instruments as Flstudio allow you to combine chanels between instruments, there is advantages from that, but there it can also bring you problems to your mix, specialy if you dont have completly sure of what your doing...

but recently i have even more than that improving something very important, when i started to use chorus, phase and reverb tricks using sends/return chanels, by mixing the track this way, i found that it sounds more deep and the instruments can have diferent presence...

not even to consider the diference on balance or punch, because the track can even make you think the remix it has a higher bpm pitch

well basicly, my point is not showing off, but discuss about what do you think, and if you also can share some experiences you did your self, or add some more content to maybe help some people to understand how to improve their music

cheers

in this case i think it's personal biases... i am a fan of the old sound and although the 2007 version sounds a bit rough i prefer this over the 2010 sound... the dynamics in the 2010 version are shortened and this is important too.

Curiously i was thinking of starting a similar thread, i am relatively new to production (1 year) and i used to have very good ideas at the start but hadn't got the skill to develop them yet so the other day i was trying to mix again a particular tune i am very happy with the result (note that i'm still noob at mixdowns) the kick was peaking at 0db and in general all the elements sounded a bit crunchy.... well after leveing everything it resulted that the overlimited sound.... was better than the polished sound :wtf: in this case i think the "professional" way to act would be to add some distortion to simulate the effect without making it clip but it is astonishing...

I don't know if i accidentaly left some strings after the drop playing subtle but when i polished the mix this strings became too appealing and didn't fit on the mix at all but at the same time getting rid of them wasn't a solution too because then that part of the track lacked something (i think this is biased again, i'm used to the track i know and can't admit so easily the new sound)

For this cases i really miss a co-production partner, you don't know when your ears trick you.

The difference is quite minimal.

The new one sounds better, and it also sounds louder...

I hardly listen to Psy at all, and I can tell you that tune is pretty generic.

Technical know how is not a perquisite for making a good track.

There's always going to be someone out there that can make better music with tier equipment and less technical know how than yourself.
Mad for Brad
First track, despite a few deficiencies has much more character and more enjoyable over all. The new one sounds so incredibly bland, plastic and cold.
Subtle
I think in this case that its because its been 4 years since you made the first version and thats the reason for the improvement.

I would generally say, the less elements you need to make up a track, the better it will sound.
LoveHate
i think it all comes down to choosing the right sounds, and than everything else just falls in place.

nice to see people talking about it

i remember you, tha the subject is not about the track content, but about mixing, my ideia is not showing off or discuss if the track is good or bad, is simply discuss the feeling of remixing tracks in a diferent way, with a diferent techniques or perspective...

in this case i didnt changed the style and structure... but its plenty possible remix the same track for any other electronic style

i also have seen nice opinions this mixing perspective

@ Rodri Santos

that said "i think this is biased again, i'm used to the track i know and can't admit so easily the new sound"

and ... "For this cases i really mix a co-production partner, you don't know when your ears trick you"

he is very right, sometimes, people get the ears addicted to a kind of sound, and that

and Mad for Brad also said something very interesting
"First track, despite a few deficiencies has much more character and more enjoyable over all. The new one sounds so incredibly bland, plastic and cold"

i agree with you, the first track, it has indeed more character, but i dont know if im thinking this, because it was the first and the original one, and like Rodri santos said, it sounds like im get used to it, and know my ears find dificult to adapt to a new track...

possibly, you eared the 2007 track first, right???

and if you had listened the 2011 remix first?? would you got the same ideia?

you know what i mean??

cheers

i wanted to say that i miss a cooproduction partner, i don't want him to be included in the mix :P typo... (fixed)

Less elements are definitely a win, i have noticed that i tend to use particularly heavy sounds in the form of leads and supersaws and my tunes sound better when i use plucks and less layers, or at least less elements on the mid frequency band.
