Hissing on S sounds on records

I have this strange problem where i sometimes get this phasing, hissing type sound on records. it seems to happen a lot where there if vocals, that start with an "S"

sounds strange eh? I heard about this once before on this board a long time ago, but i wasn't able to find the thread.

anyway, on most records it is OK, but some it is really noticeable, like DJ tiesto - In My Memory.

it sounds like the vocalist is lisping, "hold me - seethin in my memory"

anyway, it sucks. i thought maybe my stylus needed changing, so i changed them, and no difference. besides they were playing pretty much OK besides that record and a few others, so i didn't think it was needles. it happens on both my tables, so that isn't the problem. and i even tried switching mixer channels, that is not it either.

I am using stanton scratchmasters, with 1.5G of weight, height is set at 1, anti-skate at 1.5

what can i do to stop this hissing, does anyone know?

can't really do much about it. The "s" seems to cause a lot of troubles, but putting the signal through a de-esser (yes, actual piece of equipment!) is usually done in the recording process, not while playing back.
Yup you seem to be the victim of some nasty aliasing. I know the problem. Call tiesto and tell him to record on a softer volume level and use a de-esser :D

hmm.. do you have his number? :)

so, in other words, there is no problem with my equpiment, and no way to fix this problem, because it was in the recording to begin with?

well, that's good to know.

*slaps tiesto around with a trout*

it could be your needles. Its like that on my needles too. I have the stanton 500al's. Im not sure but i think the orfton's are better. :conf:

check your needles weight-balance, maybe they are set too heavy, this mostly causes distortion on higher frequencies. Especially with some dirt in the groove...

Yeah, i tried different stylus. but you mean, that stanton needles might just.. not work for that record? seems kinda goofy..

I tried a bunch of different weight and anti-skate settings, from 0.5 to 4.5, nothing changed it.
