Metro (my work) did a story about these guys from Calgary. They created a video in less than 8 hours to show how easy it is to create a hit top 40 song. My work sent out an email about them today, because since printing the story, their video has gotten a lot of attention. Apparently, the story only ran in the Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver markets. And since the story ran, their youtube page has more than 360,000 views (less than 1000 when Metro ran the story) And..
• Gene Simmons contacted them to see about signing with his company
• Blackberry wants to sponsor them (Dan uses in the video)
• Multiple interviews on many other medias (Sun, Post Media, etc.)
• They're going to be featured on MuchMusic
Here's the vid. I found it interesting, because it's true, and the same thing can be said about a lot of EDM tracks out there too. If you have the right computer software, and limited knowledge of how to use it, you can call yourself a music producer. lol
because it takes one thing that most people dont have... talent and innovation. Experts can make anything look easy until you actually try it yourself. This song would be ok if it was resung by a better vocalist and re-edited

I agree. There's probably ppl on this forum that could have put together a better sounding top 40 track in 8 hours. I guess the point was to show that it doesn't take much time, preparation, or creativity to create a track like that. It's all the same unoriginal in the end.

This is not exactly news. Though I've seen the vid and it's quite entertaining.

disagree.. i bet you could put almost anyone in front of ableton or whatever they were using and they wouldnt have the first clue what to do. Also you need to know what plugins to get, how to use them. Which of the thousands of sounds to use and where, then how to filter and effects them. Then you need to know how to write lyrics. Do the proper arrangement. Vocals, mastering. Not to mention the actual raw talent which is immeasurable.
Anything is easy if you know how to do it. I challenge anyone here to do what they just did. And what they did wasnt even that good but it still takes a lot of know how.
Sure life is better since the virtual world in the fact that you dont need a different machine for each sound (making it cheaper). But please dont tell me that just anyone can make a hit record.

I agree it does take a lot of knowledge to do what they did but the knowledge is more about computers then it is about music.
Its much easier to produce a track nowadays and it doesn't take nearly as much time to sit down and produce something that the masses will eat up.

thats like saying if you know everything you need to know about a guitar you can be a rock star. But yet most people who know how to play a guitar never become one.

while there is a huge technical aspect to it you still need to understand chord progression, musical layering and at least some ear/talent to make it sound somewhat good. Most successful producers have some sort of musical background, be it playing in a band before or having some music work done that was unrelated to edm prior to.

Don't take it too seriously guys it's just a vid 2 stoners made saying hey you don't have to be an Einstein of music to bust a top 40 track. It's something everyone already knows but they took it a step further and made a video about it...

Oh I don't disagree that you need to have an understanding of music to be able to produce any type of music but the technology has allowed people with less understanding of music to produce tracks that the masses will eat up.
I agree that successful producers have to have some sort of musical background but there are a ton of one hit wonder producers who make a very short and lucrative career without having the same type of musical knowledge.

of course the song is crap (that's the point), and I could name MANY local producers that could do the same in less than 8 hours BUT at least they are writing and singing their own parts..
It's shocking how many newer EDM 'producers' (and I use that term very loosely) simply buy and download some or all of their parts, make a collage of them, and claim they 'produced' it.. such a load of bull.
