Where did it originate?

Is it primarily a North American thing or is the term popular in Europe too?
SYSTEM-J
Good question. I imagine it's mostly an Internet thing, because you very rarely hear it said offline or used in flyers, promo blurbs or record stores.
geroin
i actually never seen anyone use it outside of ta
d-miurge
it exists, as it's on wikipedia
Darkarbiter
Ishkur maybe?
montana
no, it's not ishkur, if i'm not mistaken he hates that term as well, even though he's used it.

it's an forum thing and i'm not sure about this but i think it came from this forum as a replacement to 'electronica'. it was sort of 5-6 years ago but i can't confirm it, but i know one of the big debaters, i think yaletrance/pio or someone like that started using it and eventually it trickled down.

Umm, Electronic Dance Music?

Is this actually serious?
SYSTEM-J
Did you actually read the question?

I seem to remember PVD was the first notable figure to use the term "EDM", and it probably caught on here because this is a trance forum.
Mattinsanity
to even utter that acronym sounds ridiculous. I prefer saying Tronica from now on.

The questions asks where the acronym "EDM" originated.

EDM is an acronym for Electronic Dance Music. I don't see where the question is of relevance beyond that. Any name comprised of multiple words can have an acronym.

SYSTEM-J
Where it originated is not the same as what it stands for. IDM is an acronym, but it did not always exist and it was not always in common usage. It came from a specific place - a mailing list.

Come to think of it, I've only seen it used here. I've used it in person, but no one else gets it. I assumed they just weren't into "the scene" enough to know.
