I envy Vengeance...

There seems to be a lot of VEC loops that would give a full force drive to my tracks and a lot of modern uplifting tracks seem to get most of their rhythmic drive from those kinds of loops.

There is one problem though: I can't afford them. I don't have the money to buy those packs. So I'm standing there like the poor who's glaring at the toy store window and watches how everybody else affords these toys and fly away with them, leaving me there, alone. :sadgreen:

Anyway, the reason is that I'm a minor and therefore don't have a job, nor a bank account. Both my Fl Studio copy (currently running version 9.8.0) and my computer I'm running it on are gifts, if you wonder how I got into this expensive hobby anyway.

What I'm trying to ask is, is there a way actually make my own driving percussion patterns without offering a single penny? Please let me know.

I'm a bit of an anti-preset-loop person so I might be biased, but I'm of the opinion that using a drum or percussion loop somebody else made is good to learn off of, but if you already know what you're doing you should program your own beats.

With that said, FL Studio is pretty good for programming drum beats, some people use it in addition to other DAWs for it's drum sequencing.

I don't really understand what you're asking. It's like asking "how do I make a good song?" To make good, driving percussion, you just have to make... well, good, driving percussion. Compare your tracks with other tracks. A & B the audio, listen to what their percussion sounds like and try to work out why yours doesn't sound as good.

I have a question though. Do you have any drum samples beyond the included ones? If not honestly I would save up. (I don't know what you mean about being a minor not enabling you to have a job or a bank account, I'm 17 and I have both of those things and have for 3 years now, but I digress) Or pirate them, but of course that's not exactly recommended.

Absurd
Raphie
good question and yes there is,
I like oyur attitude about willing to learn and i agree with Seandroid, it's much more fulfilling to program your own percussion
I would suggest to start with the stickies here on the forum and take it from there.

a typical track would need at least
kick
clap
snare (layered on clap)
closed HH
open HH
cymbals for chorus
some persusive elements (toms/conga's etc)
play with reverb and delay
also play with quantization, normally one would like some dotted 8ths in there or apply one of the logic grooves (most 16A or 16C if your on a Sander van Doorn trip)

also don't be shy with compression on your drums.
these are all the elements you need to make vengeance type loops yourself.

Pro tip:

When making you own percussion loops, add your kick and snare last.

If you build a cool and driving loop without the kick and snare present, when you add those elements it takes it a whole new level.

theres PLENTY of free loops around on the web, i bet the stickies even have links to some.

Erm

I disagree completely.

But then we can can't we.

or if you're that worry about making your percussion sound fuller with loops, just find your favorite tracks and sample the parts in which they have the loops running. then glitch, chop, edit as much as you want.

for a little hint on vengeance, it's pretty much all stolen and sampled loops that are recycled from other tracks.

so in essence, you're really not missing out.

;)

Fair enough. I always find my percussion sounds loads better when I am not building a track around a kick.

I also find it easier to get levels right too.
