Mixing feedback

Ive been working on something for a little while but my speakers broke :o. I was hoping to get a bit of feedback on the mix so far that ive got, not the actual song itself cause there's still lots of work to be done. Im still pretty new to this, but I did try to get it as good as possible with the terrible headphones I have now; using the fruity db meter, it doesn't go over 0db even with no limiter. The volume is a little low though, but I didn't have time to render another file.

Kick sounds a little anemic and the snare takes up way too much space in the mix. It's probably my own personal taste, but the highs are a little too bright and a little over-played. Musically, it sounds good, though.

EDIT: NVM

Are you suggesting that the snare be lowered, and the kick raised? Kind of confused when you say anemic there.

The snare just takes up way too much space. It's got a huge decay that sort of spoils some of the room for other instruments. It might also need to be lowered in volume, but I'd halve the amount of time it takes up in the mix, first.

The kick isn't loud enough, for my taste at least, in relation to the rest of the tune.

Hmm, all I have on the snare is a reverb but im pretty sure I know what you're talking about. Thanks for the tips.

If the reverb is causing the decay, then yes - that's what I'm talking about.:toocool:

So I got a bit of progress done. Kick was raised and the snare was lowered. New demo has a new bassline ive been working on rather than the preset I was using before. It still needs a bit of tweaking though.

From what I hear, it seems like the snare needs to be lowered a little bit more, but then again, im using some cheapo earbuds so I cant really say. Does the mix still hold?

Why do people continually insist on using so much compression? Everything sounds so flat. It's really hard to judge the levels of elements when they're being so compressed again at the output.

Some points to consider though:

Your kick and bass (i.e. bass range) are too loud and muddy and drown out the mix. You do have quite forward hats but the mids just don't 'speak'.

Your bass is too muddy alongside the leads. Maybe the leads have too much low end, but the bass itself isn't the clearest either.

Last but not least, almost the entire mixdown is centred (i.e. mono). Make use of the full stereo spectrum by panning things around and using stereo sounds, giving space to the stereo image.

But seriously remove any master compressor you may have or go back to the mix and undo all the harm you've done. I seriously doubt this style is supposed to sound so lifeless.

Theres no compression or limiting done at all. But yeah, thanks for the tips. I definitely need to learn more about this before finishing the song.

Edit: Just realized I left the limiter on by mistake.
