Buying tickets before an event lineup has been announced

so recently this has been getting on my nerves. everyone knows that to get the cheapest tickets, you buy early. i find the logic in that. it's pretty straightforward. what i don't get is these people that are producing huge shows putting tickets on sale with a minimal line-up announced. for example, Nocturnal festival. Now, last year i went. I paid $35 for the whole weekend for tickets. It was insane. definitely one of the top events i've been to. So of course i'm wanting to go this year. so i wait and tickets get announced. $80 for the 2-day pass. i'm sitting there thinking to myself. what exactly constitutes paying double to price as last year? so obviously the next step was to look for a line-up. i search and search and i find nothing at all when the tickets first went on sale. so now they've been on sale for more than a week or so and they announced like 6 artists on the lineup. Above & Beyond would be the only one i'd be interested in seeing, but i've seen them plenty before, so i decide to wait for more of the lineup to be announced. so fast forward to last night. i look up to see if anymore of the lineup has been announced. I see that instead of announcing more of the lineup, they're ALREADY RAISING PRICES. and that's before even announcing more than 6 artists. that pisses me off. i'm not comfortable paying $80 for something that i have no idea what i'm paying for. i'd rather not have to go through the trouble of selling them later when i find out there's not anyone i wanna go see. i just don't agree with that way of doing things. i don't like taking risks.
TL;DR: i'm kinda annoyed by companies not releasing full lineups before raising prices. |

Then just don't go? That is lame though... Maybe their is no competition for insomniac. |

That's pretty much the decision I'm contemplating. Last year was a blast. Kinda upset I'd be missing out. Just can't bring myself to support business ethics like that. |

Well, Massive Intent does it that way, Insomniac, and hell even Ultra. I hate saying you have to have "faith," but in this case you really do if you want the cheapest price. I purchased my tickets and hotel already because I feel there is no way they are going to take it down a level.
Rewind to 2 years ago before Massive Intent started doing shows in '09. Texas was lucky to have 2 artists I wanted to see at the same show and when they did, I had no problem paying $20-30. Now, we are paying $40 a day for a lot of artists and 12hours of quality production! In my opinion, this is still cheap. You know Insomniac is going to have some sick DJs this year.
They said they were announcing another 20 artists this week, but this week is almost over. I don't know man, I hate how they do it also, but I know I'm going to go either way. |

Seeing more and more people doing this lately. Locking in the sales early lets them gauge interest before they book people, not after (prevents disasters, but, in theory, also allows them to book better people if these presales do well). I only really see the point in clearly established events that consistently bring quality talent and bring enough of it to ensure that it's a safe bet that there is plenty for everyone to enjoy.
It's kind of like buying baseball tickets. It's a fair bet to say that a Yankees game in August will be meaningful, but do you really want to buy your Astros tickets now? They might be 30 games under 500 already. I have no problem buying DEMF tickets now because they bring hundreds of what I consider to be the best DJs and producers of a certain type of EDM every single year. I'm not banking everything on the chance that the 1-2 headliners will be to my liking.
At the end of the day, if you don't want to buy them now, don't, but I have no problem with the promoters trying to ramp up sales to cover their asses and give a percentage of their customers a deal in order to do so. |

I don't blame them either, I just wish they would book stuff besides electro, uplifting trance, and brostep with their new found financial stability :( |
