The shutdowns are shady. Rojadirecta (.org at first, but .com and .net a day or two later as well) was shut down and re-directed. It's a site based out of Spain and has won two court cases in Spain where the Spanish court said it was a legal site. The only US tie it had is that it uses GoDaddy as its registrar (servers are in Spain though). And GoDaddy says they haven't touched anything on their end and has never received any notice from the government about this.
So the government is going to a higher level than the registar. And people aren't really sure where.
It still has other domain suffixes that work (like .me) and I believe they are all still with GoDaddy or Dynadot (another US based registar).
