It could be argued that clubbing in Chicago has become stale and predictable, but not if the new club The MID has anything to say about it. Opening earlier this year, The MID is on a mission to bring back the idea of a multi-purpose space, able to host both bands and DJs, and do it well. After a full gutting and remodeling, entering the former home to clubs like The Generator and Rive Gauche will not conger up memories of these former spaces. With ample lounge and dance space, not to mention long bars on all levels, The MID is upping the ante in Chicago, and not just from a form and function standpoint, but also in forward thinking booking. On February 18th, The MID is linking up with alias. to provide a refreshing and varied soundscape, all under the umbrella of house.
As one of the men behind dirtybird records out of San Francisco, Justin Martin has been molding the underground scene for close to a decade. His first release of Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly records, "The Sad Piano," became an instant underground hit and made him a name to watch in 2003. With a discography that includes releases and remixes on Om Records, Buzzin' Fly and, of course, dirtybird, Justin is not afraid to experiment with different sounds and vibes. From the deep and soulful feel of Om to the glitch-heavy take on house that is dirtybird, Justin switches gears with ease. This also makes for DJ sets that are close to impossible to categorize, outside of the common thread of quality.
When it comes to electro-driven DJ sets, the conversation cannot be had without Alexander Robotnick's name being dropped. After skirting the underground in the early nineties to focus on scoring films and producing world music, Robotnick got back behind the decks in the early 2000s energized by the new sounds being produced and the tools being used in the booth. Never straying far from the genre that he helped to create and perfect, this Italian born musician loves to light up the floor with his eclectic mixes and tongue-in-cheek track selection.
Rounding out the house pallet for the evening is a slew of local talent in both rooms including rising star Funk Shui warming the crowd in the main room and the Parisian transplant and Souvenir head-honcho Frederick Zahm headlining the side room. Also on the bill for the night are alias favorites prep.step and fresh faced jon cue, among others. |
