Masked Chinese migrant ordered released, will live in Toronto

The Canadian Press
VANCOUVER—A Chinese man who entered Canada disguised in a mask as an old Caucasian man was ordered released after more than three months of being detained.
Immigration and Refugee Board adjudicator Anita Merai-Schwartz ordered the migrant released Thursday on condition he post a $5,000 bond and report weekly to the Canada Border Services Agency.
In coming to the decision to release the migrant, Merai-Schwartz said he paid for entering Canada using money from his parents.
“Eight individuals apparently associated with this operation have been arrested in Hong Kong. Thus I do make the finding that in this regard you did use a human smuggling operation to get to Canada,” Merai-Schwartz said.
The migrant’s identity is protected by a publication ban.
Merai-Schwartz noted the man has remained in detention because of concerns that his large debt either to the smugglers or his parents could motivate him not to appear at his next refugee hearing.
“Additionally, you were found to be a flight risk due to evidence that you were vulnerable to and malleable by the snakeheads,” Merai-Schwartz said
But lawyer Daniel McLeod, who is representing the migrant, said a Chinese-Canadian closely linked to the young man’s family has agreed to post the bond and provide accommodation in Toronto.
According to previous hearings, the man boarded an Air Canada flight from Hong Kong last October wearing an elaborate latex mask similar to ones used in Hollywood movies. He removed it during the flight, prompting a warning from the Canada Border Services Agency that was later leaked to the media. He was arrested at the Vancouver International Airport.
As a condition of his release, he must report within a week to the CBSA office in Toronto where he will reside with the family friend. After that he must report weekly to CBSA. As a refugee claimant he is able to apply for a work permit.
(I have nothing good to say about this, deport him and let China execute his ChinaMan's ass) |

And I'm sure just putting on a mask is enough to get past security at an airport and all of the people on the plane... |

The biggest joke here is how our refugee system gets abused like theres no tomorrow. So this guy:
1. Borrows money from family and immigration smuggling ring.
2. Makes attempt to come over with expensive mask.
3. Gets caught.
4. Claims refugee status because of #1 where he owes money and can't go back because of it.
That's basically saying hey come be a citizen but MAKE SURE you burn your bridges at home to a point where they'll kill you if you return. If this guy had worked for 10 years to buy that mask and flight here he wouldn't have the people wanting to kill him, and thus he'd be denied refugee status and sent back. But instead he took the easy way out in borrowing the money from an illegal smuggling ring and is being rewarded for it.
It's really sad that people like this tarnish the refugee policy for those who actually need it. Also sad that people like this get to stay when theres a crazy amount of people who can and are ready to contribute to society and have fought hard to be here but get sent back on technicalities. |

Not that I support an open door policy cause I definafely dont, but what this guy did was genius. It worked didn't it??
That being said, I think they should send his ass back and end the refugee program all together...
Either that or give him a job in the film industry as I said before...
Although I was being facetious... |

LOL in that regards yes it is definitely an inventive way to get the job done. Much more creative than filling a boat with 500 of your closest pals and just pointing it at Canada's coast...
It could have been the smuggling ring who set it up though. There's a huge business around that stuff that doesn't get much media attention because they fly under the radar. |

| This is just the guy who got caught... imagine how many others have came to Canada illegally and never get caught... |

uh what?
I didn't enter this country illegaly by paying human smugglers and neither did I fly in with a old womans mask on my face! It took me 6 years to get the status
srsly Nick, think sometimes, k?
what the hell is HE contributing to this country by staying here? Does he speak a word of English? Does he have enough money in his account to support himself financially (we had to show my dad's account with AT LEAST $20K in it to be allowed to attend York)- for some reason I think this guy will be making a bee-line to refuge/wellfare support funded by OUR taxes
the reason why I got to stay here for thanks to my parents' hard work over the years saving for my education and 4 years of school here as well as working full time right after - we didn't scam the system!
not to be a bitch but people like that are those who make the rest of us look ridiculous
