Have we become Toronto the Too Good?

Is Toronto the Good in danger of becoming Toronto the Too Good and Squeaky Clean?

Consider: The area of downtown formerly known as “the club district” seems to be turning into some kind of giant, family-friendly rec-room.

So now, instead of dropping ecstasy, waving a glow stick around, and dancing until dawn, you can go bowling with your family at The Ballroom while noshing on quinoa salad and hot dogs made of “artisanal beef” or see a foreign film at the TIFF Lightbox, or (come summer) play a wholesome game of table-tennis at Spin, a spanking new ping-pong boutique.

Meanwhile, Mayor Rob Ford has declared a vendetta on graffiti, vowing the downtown will be “spotless” by the time he’s through. First salvo: A summons to the Brickworks, demanding they clean the murals and tags off their historically significant walls.

City Councillor Adam Vaughan is spearheading a campaign to curtail the Animal House antics of several downtown fraternities, saying “We don’t want to stop their parties, we just don’t want them waking up the neighbours.”

I read this via Graham's FB. So true but :( at the same time. I dropped by that bowling place for a TAs bday thing (but there was a 3 hour wait to bowl!). Said screw that and they had dinner at another place.

I hope we don't become Toronto the boring/family place.

I say have all these ideas but ALSO keep the 'grungier' cooler areas of TO around as well.

Been to Ballroom twice but have not bowled there... price dropped down to $60/hr per lane on weekends and its always rammed.

One of the things I'd like to see in Toronto is last call moved to 3am...but I doubt that'll ever happen.

It's looking more and more like a downtown that equals:
"hey lets have a fun night and wrap it up around one, be in bed by two. Yay!"

Instead of:
"Let's get it done tonight, leave the house around one or two...?!"

With the way things are going, last call will probably be moved to 1 AM.

If these jerks are so 'concerned' with drinkng and driving and making stuff safe they should have subways open 24/7 on the weekend and/or have GO transit have some middle of the night trains on the weekend to service us 905ers.

Growing trend is to move more of the clubs out to the 905 and imo that makes more sense...

That would be amazing but ya doubt it'll happen anytime soon. 100% not possible with Adam V or anyone else like him in power that's for sure...

To me, dirt, dinginess, and dereliction, graffiti-tagged walls, booze cans, and parties that wake up the neighbours are all part of the definition of the word “urban.” If I wanted to avoid these things, I’d go live in, uh, Belleville.

Amen to that!
