Was never really a fan of the original, don't see what made it "special" compared to the hundreds of very similar tracks. |
Please post hundreds of very similar tracks. I'd really like to hear them. :eyes: |

It's a punchy track that I don't think needs to be played too slow though, although I'd just pitch the original down if I wanted to. Seems another excuse to milk an old idea for new money. |
Pitching a 140bpm track to 130bpm or slower will sound pretty bad. Anyway I like the remake, and even some of the new remixes. Even if the majority are against this remake (which they are not, except in tranceaddict where the majority would be against world peace aswell) it's still worth putting out if it makes another human being happy. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy and listen these new remixes, the original will still be intact and unchanged. |

You don't already know a surplus of millenial epic trance with rolling offbeat bass, a bleepy arpeggio and simple chords played on massive supersaws? |

The problem I have is that with nearly every track I loved, somebody has made a 'new' remix and none of them are actually as good as or better than the originals. There was a time (8-10 yrs ago) when this would happen, like the beatpusher remix of cloudwalking, the wrecked angle remix of chakra - I am etc but now it's just rehash after rehash. People seem unable to actually produce new 'classics' themselves. Maybe I can email anjunabeats & armada a list of tracks they haven't touched yet and let them rape every last good memory I have? |

I guess I do, but most of it isn't all that similar to Sun IMO. It's hard to describe, but IMO there's something special in Sun, something that sets it apart from all the dutch stuff at least. It has this feel good/happy vibe without being cheesy in a bad way. UK trance was probably closer to Sun than dutch trance was and I know dutch trance much better than UK trance. So, yeah, I'd still like to hear more similar stuff. |

tend to agree - it has an icey cool vibe (makes sense being scandanavian i guess) compared to the fluffier, clunkier dutch stuff. |

I always thought of Sun as a slightly different sound to pretty much anything else at the time, and loved it.
His own reowrk sounds alright, might pick it up to play for a friend. |

Yeah I see your point, but I do believe that the original artists should be able to remake their tracks as many times as they want. |

I liked the original back in the day, wasn't my favorite trance song ever but it got the job done... though I agree with Ian how many of these "updates" to classic trance songs are pretty pointless and usually sound worse than the original. Like that Cosmic Gate remix of "Carte Blanche" :sadgreen:
If you can't bring anything new to the track aside from utilizing "current" trends (i.e. electro-ish basslines, lots of sidechain), why even bother? Can't the current crop of trance DJs simply play the classic version if they want? |

Interesting topic and I'd like to share my views on two things: this 'Sun' remake and revamps overall.
First of all I have to say that I absolutely love this new Slusnik Luna 2011 version. It's intention is clearly just to update the track to 2011 without reinventing itself completely. Even doing "only" that it sets itself apart from 99% of the current trance out there with the amazing attention-to-detail in the production. Just listen to all the crazy tricks with the bleepy sound, the manic breakbeat edits in the outro or just overall think how fluid and musical (yet not so typical) the arrangement is. Every eight bars is different throughout the track. Having played this tens of times since last summer it's been great to notice that (in both Finland and abroad) it seems to always bring smiles to peoples faces, lift hands in the air and pull people to the floor in a way that only 1% of tracks does. IMHO fully justifies its existence.
Then the trickier question regarding all the remakes and refreshes out there... I have quite biased view on that because whole DJ culture has since the New York underground disco days of late 70s been built on remixing, re-editing and remaking. In rock'n'roll everything old was sacred and in acid house everything was there to be sampled and recycled. These were the ethos of early EDM pioneers. The production sound is also changing so rapidly that most of the things done in the 90s sound just too dated to be played anywhere else than a classics party without a track standing out too much. So from that perspective it's OK to refresh past classics so that today's generation of clubbers can enjoy the tracks. Not everybody was able to experience the trance explosion of early/late 90s. Then on the other hand the "forward forever, backwards never" attitude has been equally big part of this culture and IMHO the focus should be in creating amazing new music rather than looking back. I guess for most of us the majority of all the remakes feel pointless, but does that mean that the ten great ones should have been left undone?
Anyways... Personally I am happy to see this out and I hope that this triggers Slusnik Luna guys to make more music again and hopefully we'll see their debut album out too one day:-) |
