Production workflow - I need help!

Hey guys,

Recently I have had a mental block with production. My production skills have got to a level now where I am comfortable producing just about anything that comes into my mind, but over the past 4 years I have placed too much focus on my engineering and lost a lot of my creative flair.

As a result I am now struggling to be innovative; I lack vision as to where I want a track to go.

How to you guys go about your work flow?

I.e. I know some producers who start producing just after the intro, then go on to breakdown etc.. leave intro until the end... or some people start with the breakdown and then work on the rest..

I'm just struggling for inspiration at the moment.

(And yes... I have done a forum search for this but the terms are very subjective and have not found anything I am looking for!)

Thanks!!

listen to new music in genres that you normally dont listen to.

A really easy thing to do is map out the energy of the track. You can do this on a piece of paper, but the easier and more practical thing to do is to do it in your DAW via automation. That will at least get you to mark out sections, get a sense of progression, and might spark whatever musical concepts you will need for your song.

I like Eric J's method of arranging: do it as you go along.

I usually start with the breakdown where the main phrase comes in. Something that helps me a lot is a keyboard connected to my computer. Messing around with different synths on a keyboard brings more inspiration than with the mouse.

the best thing to do is to try to seperate your creativity sessions from your technicality sessions as much as possible

Good one, that works very well for me too.

Worrying about creativity is about the worst thing you can do. Like worrying about maintaining an erection in bed or so I hear. I would also listen to lots of music. Surround yourself with things that might inspire you. Whether it be EDM , classical, rock or an 8 ball.

good tips i struggle with this as well.
i often find a "charter" (like a remix) a good kickstart for new things and get the inspiration going.

i agree with this. it's difficult to combine the engineering with the creativity, so keeping them separate helps you focus on each comprehensively.

90% of your musical inspiration comes in the first hour. If you dont have anything by then, scrap it

True. Some days i cant even think of a good beat, and i have to stop in a half hour. Other days i have an idea and i can spend hours working that idea out
