Belated Happy Birthday!
I'm not sure full time is better. I'm an FTE (full time employee) that extensively interacts with contractors and offshore developers. It's pretty much a hellish situation. There's only a few fulltime people left and mgmt treats us as if we're lucky to have a job. Their attitude is that are hoards of programmers in India that they can hire for a lot less money. If you don't go along with the plan, they will fire you. Not going along with the plan basically means not working 12 hours a day and dealing with all the code that comes from India. When (not if) we get ty code, that just means the FT people need to work harder to coach the offshore 'developers' more. You know the ones that are replacing American developers.
I'm on international calls each evening with a revolving door of strangers whose names I can't pronounce so that the company can get away with paying them $25k a year. It's not fair to them either. They're just trying to make a better life over there, it's too bad these corporate greed has permeated to such a point that everyone gets taken advantage of.
Then we have the onshore contractors who come in and sling code for six months. Once those contractors leave, the full timers have to deal with the aftermath. Once again it's a nightmare usually resulting in non-standardized, undocumented code that we have to integrate and maintain.
This used to be a fun job and I worked with a lot of good people. Now it's a f-nightmare. I can't plan for the future or enjoy the moment because there's no stability. It's like having an insane spouse that keeps a loaded gun under their pillow. Sleep well?

| I have a kid. I have a family. I need stability when it comes to income. Contract market is too watered down right now. Too many people out of work going after it. |
