The 2012 budget plan that President Barack Obama unveiled this week includes a proposal to impose a $5.50 fee on every traveller entering the US from Canada by commercial vehicle aircraft or vessel (airlines, cruises, buses, etc.) More precisely, it would end a waiver that visitors from Canada (not just citizens or residents, but all visitors) have enjoyed until now.

According to Birgit Matthiesen of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association, 16,347,580 air passengers from Canada in 2009 at $5.50 would bring in $89,911,690 or almost the $110 million the Department of Homeland Security said they were looking to generate in the 2012 budget proposal.

They want to try and make $110 million, but they just might lose billions. I guess its time for Canada to build larger refineries and sell the US portion of bought petrol to China (The US supply of oil used in one year, 20% comes from Canada). Plus Quebec can just turn off Vermont and Upstate New York :haha:

this is discrimination against canadians.

if they are going to do this then they should do it to visitors from ALL countries.

nonetheless, it is a dumb idea.

Someone I spoke to in the US, says they do it to everything except Canadians, Mexicans and people from the Caribbean. Plus only way you wont get hit with the tax is if you drive into the US.

I guess we all will have to drive into the US and use their regional airports to get where we have to go. It be a waste of time, but save $5.50 and screw the government, until they start charging Canadians entry by car or using their regional airports.

We'll just start charging them $6 for coming up here.

Meh, who cares, its just $5. Think if it as like a toll....I used to pay $4 or something to go from the USA to the QEW and you didnt see me bitching about it :) And then on the NYS Thruway when I came back.

Tax/toll/whatever you wanna call it, you drive, you pay......not even that serious. :wtf: :happy2:

Edit: and yes I am aware that the money for the above examples goes to two different places, my point is to just get over it because its not that serious.

Just the amount I pay in taxes to get to the US, is the cost of a plane ticket from JetBlue roundtrip (give or take).

Toll? There no tolls in Quebec, they might bring them back though I know that. I never go off island and when I do I fly out. $120 in taxes just to go to the states, now another $5 to enter. I would love to see Americans start paying 48% taxes on their income, 18% on goods. Lets see how you would feel for another tax.

I didnt say anything about Quebec, as I am not familiar, now did I? ;) ;)

Endlesswave: hehe I know :) ;)

I know that you didn't. I am just speaking about different situations, seeing you're from New York (tolls) and I am from Montreal (no tolls).
