| for 500's you need about 2-5 grams of pressure... and height of about 1... but these are all really up to you each will produce a different feel and provide better worse tracking... |

| what do you mean by a height of 1?!?! maybe I haven't gotten to that step yet, but the tone arm is supposed to be horizontal? |

sorry... didn't mean to get ahead of you...
basically you are correct the arm should be horizontal but there are some other things that you need to adjust before you can throw down a track... there are about 3 settings that you need to make on M3D's...
first is the is the weight/stylus pressure... you set this by first getting the tone arm to balance horizontally and you "zero" the wieght by twisting the ring on the front... then rotate the ring until you reach the desired weight (I use 3 grams personally, but really this is up to you)...
2nd is to set the antiskate... some people leave this alone others set this to the same setting as the stylus pressure....so if you are using a weight of 3 then your anti-skate should be set to 3... that's how I have my tables set up and it works for me...
3rd would be the tone-arm height... if you look at the base of the tone arm (where the whole tone-arm setup connects to the table)... you should see a black ring and a "lock" switch... you need to unlock this switch and then you can rotate the black ring... this will adjust the height of the tone-arm... you should set this to height of "1" and then lock it into place... after that you should be set....
throw on a track and enjoy... ;-) |

yeah I got to that after, I just never read ahead....
did all those....
threw on suburban train and I was watching it spin with a grin on my face :D.....i set the pressure to 2 though, I'll use both and see how they feel, but I'll take your suggestion of 3
thanks for the help!!! :) |

the cardridges are fine, they are included a lot with TTz and several clubs have them.. the sound quality is pretty good, but some guys here say that u can better get better and more expensive needles.. these do their job fine for starting out so..

a friend of mine showed me a neat little trick for adjusting the antiskate. it requires a one-sided record (one side is pressed the other is smooth and glossy, rare but they exist)
so you throw the record on the deck with the shiny unpressed side up. put the needle on it and spin it at 45 rpm.
the tonearm will tend to move towards the inside or outside of the record. use the antiskate to make the tonearm stay still. as you adjust the antiskate control, you will notice it will change the direction the tonearms "gravitates" towards... adjust the antiskate to a position where the tonearm stays still or moves the least while the smooth record is spinning.
500AL's are good beginner cartridges. you wont see them much on the decks at pro events (clubs, parties, etc) - but they are inexpensive and dont sound too bad. If they are in good shape, I'd hang on to them until you feel you need something better or they wear out.
cheers,
