How to make a "raw" sound?

How can i make a track sound "rawer" and less clear in a good way? Im really bad at describing what i mean with raw sound but this was common in older trance and especially GOA music. I know it much depends on the sounds you choose but mixing wise i wanna know how to achieve that type of "old" sound which simply doesn't exist today.

Don't use as many hi hats and other high end percussion. Fewer effects, and fewer tracks in general. Also tape saturation.

Not sure I comprehend what sound that you're looking for, but I think that maybe you want some mild harmonic distortion? Have you tried a tape saturation effect?

little to no reverb and delay. As MJB mentioned, the more raw and upfront a sound is, the more space it takes therefore less sounds. Use a cabinet sim . distortion or saturator send on elements you want to thicken. Lowering the bit and sample rate works well on drums.

distortion

record it to tape and record it back. repeat ONE BILLION TIMES

pitching down the sounds make them sound a bit raw, vocoder & grain effects sometimes work well too

I suggest getting into FM sounds like in FM8. The fx and fm programming can get a lot of those dense dirty, but still relatively sharp and clear sounds. It really depends how you go about it.

But FM8 is great for that. I like a lot of "raw" sounds myself. More in the way that they resonate loud at low volumes and bring essential depth to a track.

yeah I think eq your sound then add distortion overdrive etc then eq again to take off unwanted added freqs is what I think your after. Also a cabinet sim like m4b suggested can really give you a nice crunch in your sounds

distortion works, together with gating your drumbus it works even better. RAW <> smooth (smooth is verbtails, tape saturation, tube emulation) try to stay away from these type of effects if you want a "raw" upfront sound

That's sorta what I was getting at in my post - I don't understand if he actually wants raw/in-your-face or "less clear in a good way", which, to me, implies smeared (e.g., ala saturation).

hardware compression -> analog tape
